IIWY I'd move somewhere else, then you're absolutely good to retire. pick somewhere nice, but more affordable. ideas might include places like Raleigh, Charleston, Hilton Head, Naples, Boca Raton, Denver, Austin, etc etc

3.5% of $3m is $105k/yr. (assuming you're going to spend \~$600k to pay cash for a house in a lower cost of living area). considering $11.4k of your $20k monthly expenses are housing, if you pay cash for a house somewhere (and get those car payments trimmed down) you could pretty comfortably live on your investments.

the hard(ish) part is going to be changing your lifestyle slightly. you're used to living on $500k+/yr income. you're going to be moving to \~$100k/yr lifestyle.

I considered stocking up before Trump’s term started and mostly didn’t. Womp. I did set up an alternate supplier in India during his last term for one of my item types, but they are worse in several ways than my option in China, so China might still get my business.

It looks like your wife brings in $100k.  That should be about $80k ($6.66k/mo) net of taxes without your income stacked on top.

You spend $240k, so with the wife's net income it means you need to find $160k/year ($13.33k/mo) needed to maintain your lifestyle.  

If you paid off your house to make math easier, that eliminates your $100k/yr mortgage, but also removes $1.5m from taxable brokerage + whatever gains.  Your expenses would drop to about $60k ($5k/mo) not covered by the wife's.  


At 42 with 2 dependants, I would not feel comfortable retiring on less than a 3.5% rate, probably 3% to be safe.  You have a remaining invested NW of $1.87m after selling most of the after-tax brokerage to pay off the mortgage, and not counting home equity or kid's 529.  At 3%, that gives you $56k/mo to draw on.

So yea this could work, but wife must keep working at $100k.  You'd probably want to get a job, any job, to shore up the teeny sliver you're short.

By the same token, if you don't use all of it by the end of the year, you don't get a refund for what you didn't use. A while back, our kids got braces at the start of the year. Insurance paid for half, and we put the other half on the FSA. When the company subsequently had layoffs, they tried asking for funds to be returned on a prorated basis. I laughed. The rules are very clear.

If your good at talking to anyone get into sales, I work for a roofing company that gives me hot leads I drive to 2-3 homes a day get in their roof take a bunch of pics and determine if they need a new one(9/10 they do because they call us) then you give a inspection report and put a quote together with them. It’s a chill job! no one is ever on my ass and I get to meet new people everyday. Any thoughts as to what would be the impact of such a Sovereign fund on the broader market? Especially if the fund is going to compete with the private companies it terms of acquisitions. Seems like the opposite of small government.

Hey guys I am a developer and I ended up getting laid off a few months ago (shockers) my position ended being offshored 😢 long story short my manager screwed me over and honestly didn’t realize how toxic that place was until I left, it was my first job out of college.  

A few months went by, rejection after rejection I  I didn’t want to make finding a job my whole purpose in life so I decided to build something on the side to keep my skills fresh cause anyone that works in tech as a software engineer can tell you how stupid/hard the tech screenings are, completely irrelevant to the job and time consuming. 

Last week, I landed my first customerrrrrr!!!! I am so excited and honestly even though it’s only 10$ which is how much I am charging that 10$ felt soooo muchhhh betterrrr than the several thousands of dollars I was making as a developer. 

Just to say don’t make landing a job your whole purpose, you’re more than that maybe destiny has something else hidden for you. 

This job market is so brutal, and you need to prioritize your mental health. You’re way more than a stupid job regardless of how many rejections you get keep your head high and goood luck guys you got this!

So I basically built an email chatbot for companies where they can use their own data (website, faq, schedules …) and link their own support email account (e.g: info@somecompany) and whenever an inbound email is received it just automatically replies with the answer which significantly reduces the time spent replying to their own customers etc.. which makes their support email account run on autopilot in a way.

Homeless, inherited 230k. What should I do?

Hi all. My mother is on ssi and has received 205k she doesn’t own a home and has two dogs, She wanted to start a business but she had multiple personality disorder and has a million different ideas. I'm calling b******* on Trump's supposed tariffs that he's going to implement on Tuesday. Something about it has always seemed fishy to me and below is my analysis of why it probably won't occur on Tuesday.


*   **The Oddity of Tuesday Implementation**: I find it strange that the tariffs are set to take effect on a Tuesday, not immediately. This delay creates an "optionality" for Trump, leaving room for other events to occur. If Trump is serious about imposing tariffs, then it would make sense to do it immediately, however, the delay to Tuesday doesn't allow enough time for the economy to find alternative sources of supply. Here are some possible reasons:

    *   **Market Reaction**: The delay allows Trump to observe the market's reaction on Monday. If the markets react very negatively then maybe Trump would want a way out.

    *   **Judge Intervention**: The delay may allow a judge to step in and block the tariffs, giving Trump a way to say he did what he promised but was stopped by the "deep state." This way, Trump can fulfill his promise and blame someone else for not being able to fully carry it out.

     *   **Covering Short Positions**: Trump might need Monday to allow a fund to cover a short position, which would be a bet that the market would go down. After this happens, he or a fund associated with him could then buy up those same positions after the market dip.

  *    **Delay and Control:** If Trump was serious about the tariffs, they would have been implemented immediately. The delay is indicative of a desire to have more control over the narrative and potentially profit from the volatility created by the tariffs.


*   **Why Not Act Immediately?** If Trump truly believed in the efficacy or necessity of the tariffs, he would have implemented them right away, maybe even on Sunday or Monday morning. If he were concerned about a judge blocking the tariffs, his style would be to put them in place immediately and then let the judge try to overturn them. The fact that he's waiting until Tuesday is "telling" and suggests that there is something else going on.


*  **The Petty Argument**: Trump may be motivated by a dislike for the left-leaning governments of Canada and Mexico, which could be a reason for the higher tariff rates applied to them, compared to China. Kind of like "sticking it to the libs". There is a nationalistic argument for the tariffs, but the higher rates on Canada and Mexico don't make sense.


*   **Market Manipulation**: Trump is creating the volatility that he can profit from, and since he pretty much owns the justice department and the SEC, they won't investigate.


*   **A Bloodbath on Monday:** A "bloodbath" in the markets on Monday opens and an even bigger one on Tuesday when the tariffs are supposed to go into effect. The market's reaction may cause Trump to look for a way out of the tariffs.


TLDR: In essence, Trump's actions, particularly the delay in implementing the tariffs until Tuesday, are not about standard policy or even national interest. Rather, they might be part of a larger scheme for personal gain, political maneuvering, and a way to solidify his power.

In short I have no degree, I’m not close to finishing, and prior work experience isn’t great.

I’m currently a 3rd shift janitor at a hospital and this isn’t sustainable. The dream is something remote online that pays about the same if not more as my current job. I am attempting to take Coursera classes in tech support but time for them is scarce.

If the chatbot does not know the answer to something, or is not available in the data it will tell the customer/recipient that they’ve forwarded their email to the team and will notify the company. It’s essentially making a businesses support email account run on autopilot. 

money is weird, right? i was reading about tech founder vinay hiremath who left his company loom, giving up $60m. he wrote about feeling lost, trying to be like elon musk, breaking up with his girlfriend, and now he's just chilling in hawaii studying physics. 

it got me thinking about all these rich people saying "money won't make you happy." duh, i’m not chasing happiness, i'm chasing freedom. i believe that money doesn’t change an individual, it amplifies who you really are.

if you're already kind, money makes you super kind. if you're a jerk, well... you become a bigger jerk. it's like a magnifying glass for your personality. that's why lottery winners usually end up broke - they got the money before becoming the right person.

here's something i've noticed: you don't get confidence from having a six-pack - you get it from being the kind of person who shows up at the gym every day. the weights don't get lighter, you get stronger.

money is like a really good eraser. it won't write your happiness story for you, but it can erase a lot of the bad stuff. think about it - once you don't have to worry about rent or bills, you get to choose what makes you happy or sad. 

but there's a trap: we always want more. king solomon said: loving money means never having enough. it's like a treadmill - you keep running but never reach the end.

my takeaway? money itself isn't good or bad. it's just a tool that makes you more of who you already are. maybe the real trick is becoming the right person first, then letting the money follow…

Why money doesn't make rich people happy.

I withheld taxes from all of my earnings and paid quarterly taxes. I also work a normal w2 job, unrelated. From the company and others on forums, I learned I would receive my tax docs from paypal (one of the 1099s), but i didn't meet the 5k threshold from paypal so I didn't. What do I need to do? Just put what I earned without having the document to prove it?

To make this short: I started my freshman year of college in 2021 while simultaneously being in the Marine Corps. I was majoring in biochemistry. Almost 2 years ago, I had a health scare in the gym. Was medically discharged from the military and had to drop out of college. Fortunately, I am feeling fine now and am ready to return to complete my degree. I will be entering my junior year upon return. (Makes me sick to think about - I feel so far behind. Already delayed my college start date by a year with my military training right after high school). 

Anyways, I am thinking I would like a career in sales. I have been getting started on UpWork and applying to any sales positions I am able to get. I don't care about the money; rather, feel this would be a good way to get some B2B/cold calling experience while I attend college. I live in a fairly rural area so getting such experience in person, especially without a degree yet, seems nearly impossible.

Is this a mistake? Is there something else I should be doing? Would appreciate any help!

Veteran returning to college after health scare - gaining sales experience in the meantime?

It feels like the tide is starting to turn against remote work in the industry, at least among many of the banner companies. Wondering knows of a list a resource that includes companies that cannot easily implement RTO policies because they've heavily committed to remote work by dissolving leases and selling office space. I know ServiceNow falls in this category, for example.

Looking to hear success stories of people in unconventional careers, who are not doing a 9-5. What do you exactly do for a living? How did you get in this path? Would you ever want to do a 9-5? I’m currently 27, went to school, got my business degree, and landed a typical office job and have been here since. I make $75k currently, with the potential for about $90k-$100k in about 5-7 years. Any more and I’d need to go into management, and I absolutely do not want to do that. I hate sitting in an office, I’m bored, the work is soul crushing, my day just involves listening to rich people complain about not being able to save a couple of bucks a year. I want out.

I want to work with my hands a bit more. I don’t want to be trapped at a desk all day. I want a career where I’ll learn useful, practical skills. 

So, as the title says, those who have left the white collar world, what do you do now? Do you regret leaving? Looking for any advice.

Okay okay... lets cut to the chase, so here comes the tariff war, and it’s already messing things up. The prices are climbing, supply chains are a mess, and small businesses might stuck in the middle. Some will adapt, some will struggle, and a few might even find a way to win big. But this isn’t just a news —its a real life.  
  
So, how’s it hitting you? are costs going up? orders slowing down? or are you seeing a chance to pivot and come out on top? how’s your business holding up in the chaos?

Tariff war just kicked off... Is this gonna make or break our businesses? Anyone feeling the effects on their business yet?

Context:

I'm 30M, my wife's 31. We've got sufficient savings from my last job, and are now working together on a self-funded software startup. For the next 2-3 years, we expect to be heavily involved in the business, and planning to either sell it off or hire a CEO once it's a bit more mature.

Our annual spend is sub-1% of networth, expect it to reach maybe 2-2.5% with 1-2 kids. We're quite sure we do not want 3+ children.

Naturally, we're up against the body clock when it comes to kids. We know we don't want them as of today, but are wondering if we want to go the next 30-40 years without kids. Also reading some books on how to make the baby decision. One framework I liked was highlighting the fears of each choice.

Fears with having kids:  
\- Pregnancy / health issues for my wife  
\- Any kind of genetic / physical / mental health issues with the kid(s)  
\- Less time to just live a laidback life (we can probably easily afford a babysitter when needed, not keen on having a full-time nanny; if we do go ahead with kids, I'd like for us to not outsource raising them)  
\- Loss of spark between us

Fears with no kids:  
\- FOMO on a fulfilling life experience. While non-kid lifestyle is fun, it's not clear travelling around / pursuing hobbies will be a very fulfilling life for 30-odd years.  
\- At the time we started dating, both my wife and I thought the married life wasn't for us. In hindsight, it was a great decision, but I can only comment on it looking backwards. Possibly similar for kids, given I don't know what parenthood is really like.

While the first list looks longer, each risk is mitigable / fairly unlikely (except lack of laidback lifestyle). Not sure how to price the FOMO risks. Right now we're both fairly ambivalent on the choice, but it's a pretty important, irreversible decision.

Ask:

\- A majority of fatfire folk on here use their freed up time to hang out with kids. What does everyone else do? Does it get boring? Has chilling out / doing consulting projects etc given you fulfilment (for those who've been on this track 5+ years)?

\- Lots of constraints that apply to people in full-time jobs until 60 don't really apply to us.  
\--- Cash is not a huge concern, though we'd have to be a bit more careful with spend. I don't want to     venture into 3-4% of networth spend  
\--- Opportunity cost of no-kid-all-fun lifestyle seems higher (though you could also argue it's lower since we might have enough free time with or without kids, if we're not working fulltime)

What's fatfire life like with no kids?

I had a recruiter reach out to me last week. We had a 15-minute screening call, and then a day after that, I got a vague rejection email, saying they moved forward with another candidate. I asked for feedback, and she said we can book another call to talk about it. I did and just finished that chat, and she gave me feedback.

The role was being a product engineer for a GPU cloud startup. Would involve talking to a lot of clients. 

She said my answers were a bit on the harsher side, and I didn't seem very open. I was surprised because I thought the conversation flowed smoothly, and I even made a joke at one point and we both laughed. My answers were medium length and quite detailed. I asked a couple relevant questions. We went a few minutes overtime too. 

She said I seemed too direct, and they wanted someone chattier and on the softer side. I talk to a lot of people and am outgoing. I'm usually the one asking questions and getting the conversation going.

Bizarre analysis from her side. Seemed like they are over indexing on being a social butterfly.

edit: This is a US role and I'm south Asian. I'm a new grad, raised in the US. 

What was the dumbest reason you got rejected from a job?

My spouse and I are 42 with two kids age 3 and 7, living in an expensive NYC suburb. We both work and our combined annual salaries are about $550k-600k. $450-500k of that is from my fairly high-stress job (biglaw, never really off the clock) and my spouse makes the rest with a more steady job where the end of the day is really the end of the day. I'm tired and am looking for someone to tell me how much longer I need to keep this up before I can just walk away or take a huge pay cut and do something less stressful. My spouse wouldn't mind continuing to work.

We have:

Assets  
$1.8M in taxable investments  
$200k in cash  
$850K in our 401(k)s  
$500k in our Roth IRAs  
$40k across our kids' 529s  
$20k in an HSA (HDHP just became available last year)  
$250k in home equity (based on purchase price two years ago; home has probably appreciated so we might have more but trying to be conservative)  
Pretty much all investments (97%+) are in VFIAX or an equivalent S&P 500 or total market index fund

Expenses  
Around $20k/month, including:  
$8,400 mortgage payment (30-year fixed at 5%, $1.5M balance/28 years remaining)  
$3,000 in property taxes  
$300 in home insurance  
$2,200 in 2 car loan payments (financed cars at $0 down/0.9% just to take advantage of low rates and invested the cash prices of the cars instead; 18 months left to go)  
The rest goes towards food, other insurance (auto/life/umbrella), utilities, childcare, home maintenance, shopping, etc.

We always max out 401(k), IRA, HSA, 529, and have put away another $60k or more after all is said and done. Our housing payment is insane, but as anyone who has recently tried to buy in any suburb within a 45-minute train ride of NYC in a decent school district knows, even a "starter" home around here can easily cost $1M+.

As the title says, I just want to live my life and enjoy my time with my family, instead of always feeling like any time taken for myself or my family is borrowed from work. Even just knowing that I don't need to depend on my job makes it a lot less stressful, because then I can work more on my own terms and without worry of consequences.

EDIT: I don't have any desire to stay in this home during retirement. We're here to raise the kids. Once they are both out of the public school system (15 years), we will gladly pack up and leave for somewhere cheaper. School districts are what drive the crazy housing costs.
