Deep breath. You'll get bills. You'll attempt to apply for financial assistance from the hospital, and yes you may be denied. You'll agree to a payment plan and pay slowly over time. Nobody is coming for your house.

Why are you using this FA at all? What value are they providing if you're just telling them what you want to invest in, and their brokerage doesn't even offer those funds?

This sounds just like a miscommunication that you shouldn't be too upset about, but yes it should trigger you to reconsider whether you need a FA in the first place.

Recall about 2 months ago someone said they had $600k that they wanted to invest in the market but didn’t “want to buy when the market was high”. Don’t know if they ever bought in, but if they had, their investments would have already been up 4.25% or ~$25k richer.

It’s gonna be alright. One thing I’ll say is DO NOT take out an HELOC as one commenter suggested. This is a home equity line of credit. In other words,  line of credit against your home. 

Medical debt is unsecured. If you don’t pay it, it’s not secured to anything, meaning they can’t take anything from you (at least immediately). HELOCs are secured by your home. If you don’t pay it, you’ll lose your home. 

I also live in Boston. It’s very expensive. Owning your home is a huuuuuge asset. Don’t lose it by paying debt you don’t need to pay off immediately. 

I’d say call your insurance company and see what they offer. And call the hospital and see what they offer. They’ll agree to a very small payment plan (like $100 a month) versus the possibility of never getting money from you.

IMO, you make 5x the amount of an average income.

I have noticed that when I move money out of an institution, I seem to encounter more "hiccups" than when I am trying to bring new money into an account. Probably just coincidence...

I think you are asking the wrong question. Rather than asking "would you invest" I think the better question is "do I need to invest?"  


It sounds like you have roughly $4 million with an annual spend of $60k ($29k of which is already covered by a monthly payment). That makes your spend only about $30k with a FIRE number of less than $1 million. You are already set, so the question is why would you increase the risk profile of your portfolio if you have already met your goals? If you think through this question and have a good answer (example: I want to leave as much as possible to my heirs) then go ahead and dump it all in. If you don't have a great reason to increase your risk exposure, I would invest some of it, but probably DCA slowly over a period of a few years just so you can put some of that money to work.

No, it’s perfectly normal for a company to have a 150-200 PE without any clarification on how, even in the best case scenario, they’ll make enough money to bring that to a reasonable number.

I left right before a round of layoffs.

Basically I told myself that if I don't get off the train track now... I doubt I ever will.

Three reasons I made the decision:

1. Between covid, losing a parent, and entering my 30s, a lot of my priorities changed.
2. I felt bored, wasn't developing new skills, and there was a growing gap between what I enjoyed, what was being asked of me internally, and what was being requested externally.
3. And finally I had already developed all of the acumen needed to feel confident to make the jump.

So I downsized my life, put all my stuff in storage, resigned, and started to digital nomad around while building my startup (which is largely consulting to fund product experiments).

Do I have less money? Yes.  
Do I have more freedom? Yes.  
Am I happier? Yes.  
If I really needed to go back to a 9-5, could I? Yes.  
Objectively speaking, is it a good financial decision? No.  
Will my "career" ever get back on the same track? Not likely. (But I don't want to be an employee)  
Do I regret it? No, not yet. And I doubt I will.

Things I remind myself of frequently:  
In 100 years, I'm dead anyway.  
I can't take any money with me.  
I have a high tolerance for risk that others don't.  
I'm willing to look like an idiot if that's what it takes to get to the other side.

Ultimately, whatever decision you make, there will be pros/cons. Trust your gut and make sure your wife is supportive.

This is an unpaid internship except it's also an abusive work environment because you know they're scamming / lying to you. If you're fine with not getting paid then work for a company who is honest about it

I left when several things happened. 

1) My current business idea passed my due diligence work. I felt I truly had found product solution fit. 

2) My mental health was deteriorating everyday I went to work. 

3) they offered me a 6 month buy out

I know you can't bank on a buy out, and I wouldn't wish the mental health issues on anyone. My best advice is know your threshold. What monthly income do you need from the side business to feel comfortable leaving the FAANG job. Add 10% to it given the shit show that is the tech job market right now just to be safe.

Im 35 and starting trade school for HVAC and actively looking at entry level jobs/ apprenticeships. It's never too late. If I retire at 65 that's 30 years of working in it as a profession. 

Take care of your body and constantly stay hungry for skills and knowledge.

$2.5 million outside of your house and cars. That is enough to spend $100k per year pre-tax. Probably closer to $85k per year after tax. Don’t forget about health insurance which might tack on an extra $10-$20k or so depending on the plan of ACA you choose.

I have found I always need to get those types of promises in writing. Verbal agreements hold no weight and easily dismissed by the manager.  I live in a state where only 1 person has to give consent to recording a conversation.  Something to look into for yourself. Have the leverage to use when the manager denies any further increase.

I’d love to get a 10% raise but instead my company pretends the budget only allows 2-3%.

For context I’ve been in the industry about 2 years now. Started learning around 3 years ago. Self taught. College degree unrelated.

Just landed my 3rd industry job after drowning out all the outside noise and once again betting on myself. ITS STILL POSSIBLE.

Just avoid these cesspools of negativity. Believe in your skill and keep plugging at it daily. 

The only thing stopping you is you, but if you listen to outside noise like the doomers on here you will be permanently paralyzed.

I took a look at what my brokerage account gained this year from interest, dividends and gains in the market. As it stands today my portfolio is $73,907. I put $24k into it this year. At the beginning of this year I had $47,577. So I made $2,330 on my account this year. The management fee for the year ended up being $922. So my advisor is taking 40% of what I gained. Their fee is set on the amount in the account not on the amount gained.

Are financial advisors a rip off?

55 with low 401k am I screwed?

I’m 26 years old. I work at target in the evenings and weekends. I make 18 an hour. My confidence is pretty shot at this point. I’m too embarrassed to date because most women wouldn’t date a guy that works in retail and it’s hard to make guy friends due to the opposite schedule of working at night. I have an associates degree in electrical engineering that I received in 2020. In 2021 my mom got into a horrific car accident and she’s basically disabled. I’ve been taking care of her for 3 years up until my Uncle(her brother) got out the military and now he takes care of her full time. 


I don’t have much savings. I have 2k in my bank account. I want to finish my degree but it’s been four years since I’ve taken any engineering classes and I don’t want to fail.

I was misclassified as a 1099 contractor and the federal IRS determined I was actually an employee.

My parents (60s) are substantially in debt (Roughly $250K) with no retirement savings.

Their income is about $170K a year with the majority ($120K) coming from my father. He had a heart attack last year, but is back to work. I am concerned that he is working himself to death over this debt. They have had substantial debt my whole life, with their last bankruptcy being in 2015.

They have two kids, myself (24, M) and sister (23, F). My sister, grandmother, and I all live under their roof. I graduated college last year. My sister dropped out of college due to health issues. They recently asked me to help out with a budget.

We went through the debt and it is roughly $250K with the majority being payday loans/credit cards/personal loans. We have two vehicles that are paid off, but both are costing more in repairs than they are worth. Minimum monthly payments on the debt, along with essentials (rent, utilities, insurance, tolls, internet, phone plan, food, gas, etc.) is approximately $12,500.00. I tried to make a budget, but it did not make any sense with their expenses exceeding income.

Their debt is compounding as they are taking out more debt to pay off previous debt.

From my perspective, they are probably going to need to declare bankruptcy again, but advised they see a professional. I am thinking that I should keep it there.

I am selling an investment property of a relative who has recently passed away. I have it listed for $610K and it's been sitting for 3-4 months. There have been a few super low-ball offers here and there... However, I recently got one offer that seems... weird?

I was hoping anyone might be able to chime in and have a better understanding of what this investor is trying to do and whether this is a good deal, bad deal, or somewhere in-between.

The deal includes a total price of $625,000, sold "as-is", with a $50,000 down payment at closing, $1,850 monthly payments to the seller, and an 6-year balloon payment requiring the buyer to refinance or sell the property to settle the remaining balance. The payments will be serviced and disbursed using a third-party.

**Breakdown of the deal:**

* $625,000 Offer price
* $50,000 Down Payment
* $1,500 monthly payment to me
* 6-year balloon payment
* Closing costs paid entirely by the investor (buyer)
* "If Buyer is more than 14 days late on any payment, the contract becomes void. Seller (me) retains full ownership and all payments made."

These are my takeaways so far. They could be wrong...

* The investor is offering $15K over asking price = great
* It's a balloon payment with a 6-year term = bad, I think. 6 years seems too long.
* It's a balloon payment, meaning the investor could flop out and I would still be entitled to the property as well as the payments already made to me = okay
* If the investor flops out, I'm back to square one with wanting to sell the property = bad, aren't there also potential legal hassles that I'd have to attend to if the investor can't pay?
* The monthly payments would be serviced by a third-party = good, there's no hassle to keep up with the payments.

I think what this investor is trying to do is buy the property for as little upfront as possible, then renovate and flip it for a solid profit if (or maybe when) the real estate market comes back in 3-6 years.

**TL/DR:** Is this a good deal/bad deal? I personally think 6 years is too long to wait and keep up with payments. I'd like to move on, but it's also over asking price and the payments are serviced. Any counter offer advice would be greatly appreciated. Or is it even worth counter offering?

An investor offered me $15K over asking price for my recently passed relative's property but wants to do a 6YR Balloon Payment... Never dealt with selling a house before. Is this a bad deal?

Fortunate to have taken lessons from others by investing early and often, maxing 401k, living within our means.  Also benefitted from family who helped give us a jump supporting our education and allowing us to stay at home for a few years to save.  We live in a MCOL in the Midwest with monthly expenses ~$9k Here is our breakdown

Assets
- Checking/Savings (mostly HYSA) = $200k
- Brokerage = $600k
- College 529 (3 kids under 8) = $200k
- Home/Cars = $900k
- Retirement (401k + Roth IRA) = $1.5M

Debt
- Mortgage/Loans = $400k


At this point my questions are
1/How good of shape are we and what changes should we consider to ideally retire in 5-10 years?

2/I’ve been going through some difficult burn out at work and considering a 3-6 month career break to recharge mentally and physically.  Fortunate enough to even consider this, but worried how this impacts long term.

I had two funds that matured and had to be reinvested. I met with my financial advisor and specifically told him to reinvest in a specific Vanguard fund which he said could be done.  He said the funds would roll over into a money market fund and then later transferred to Vanguard. Two months later, I noticed that the matured funds were still sitting in a money market fund which was supposed to be a temporary holding place.  When I contacted my FA about this, he was not alarmed and said that I needed to set up an account with Vanguard to do this.  Why didn't he tell me this 2 months ago? He didn't apologize at all.  Should I be upset about this and move all my funds to another FA?  This is the first time I've asked him to do anything specific and he failed to do it. 

Financial adviser didn't put money where I asked.

Background:

I (29F) fell while walking outside and had excessive back pain for several weeks. Went to the doctors and they initially thought it was a pinched nerve but after more complaints of pain and an MRI/CAT scan, 2 masses were detected along my back (this took nearly 3 weeks in the hospital from admittance to biopsy result). It was confirmed to be adenocarcinoma and the surgery to remove them was not 100% successful so they say I will need radiation and chemo (consults and other tests have taken over a month). I have been in the hospital since October 16 and they are asking if I have anyone prepared to help me with a discharge. I have no family nearby and the ones that are far away don't have the means to help me. Due to it being the end of the year, my case manager is saying I will be billed up to my deductible ($8000 with Aetna) and then on Jan 1 unfortunately I will be billed again up to the deductible for PT and radiation/chemo.  I have no doubt that being in the hospital for over 2 months is going to financially ruin me but I want to know anything i can do to stop them from taking the house.

My parents passed in 2020 and left my brother (22M) and I the house and we just split bills/property tax/insurance. The savings I have are a mix of emergency fund ($8000), Misc. fund ($1000), and house repair fund ($3000).

Help:  
From what I can gather, I do not qualify for my hospitals charity fund but I will ask anyway. My main concerns are:

1. Starting PT right as I get out, hitting the deductible, and then having to pay that all over again on January 1st. Is there a way to change the billing cycle so I don't get hit with $16,000 just because of bad timing?
2. Am I disqualified from any charity/finance help because I "own" a house that I could never afford on mine and my brothers income? Zwillow zestimate is $483,000.
3. Will they come after the house if I cannot pay the medical bills?
4. Is there a megathread of what do to after leaving the hospital or a better sub to ask?

Edit: I was just informed my in network deductible is $1200, and in network out of pocket max is $8000. Out of network deductible is 2400 and out of network out of pocket max is $16,000. The $16,000 I mention above is the in network out of pocket max for 2024 and 2025 since we are so close to the end of the year

Am I screwed after leaving the hospital?

If you had 2 million in cash sitting in a few CDs over the last 6 months all coming due in the next 30 days. would you feel comfortable putting it all in VTI/VOO in todays market or would you wait for a drop?

I know timing the market is bad and that's exactly what I'm taking about doing.

I'm 45 and planning on retiring in the next 2 years.  

This money is over half of my current money not net worth just money here and in my taxable and tax efficient accounts.

Would you invest 2 million in the market right now?

I just launched my 4th start-up of the year and was looking for product exposure. 

Then decided to try posting on HackerNews for a first time and the results were all over the roof... I stayed on the front page for a couple of days and got crazy engagement.

A quick disclaimer: the product isn't flashy as it generated 11k visitors with only a few conversions. 

HackerNews has been by far the highest ROI for my time and you should use it to your advantage to generate more eyeballs for your product. 

Keep in mind that the majority of people there are tech people, so it should interest them as well.

I'm 35, and i've only worked regular jobs in my life, or as some people call it, entry-level jobs or dead-end jobs, not sure how to be specific, the only places i've been employed at are at Grocery Stores, Restaurants, Retail stores such as Target/Walmart, or at a warehouse, which i'm still at, at Amazon.

Lately, i've been worried about my future, mainly in terms of being able to support myself independently once my folks eventually pass away.

Anyone else here relate or have a similiar story or situation?

Is it possible or has anyone here made a successful career change at 35+? or just didn't get into a high professional career until well into your 30s or older?

I applied for a paid internship through my university career site, and the listing seemed legit. I recently had an offline meeting with the founder of the startup, and here's where things got weird.

The founder told me about the company and its patents, claiming he's been working on this product for 8 years. According to him, the company is "close to completion," and a certain electric car company CEO is set to review their product in 4-5 months. He seems very confident the company will succeed and get acquired or secure funding soon.

Here’s the catch: the internship is on a "deferred payment" plan. Essentially, I would fill out a timesheet, set my own hourly rate, and log my hours. BUT I’d only get paid once the company either:

1. Gets acquired by a big player (e.g., the car company mentioned)


2. Secures funding.


This all sounds very "too good to be true" to me. I’d essentially be working for free now in the hopes that someday I’ll get paid. I get that startups are risky, but this feels like a gamble with my time.

I want to get industry experience, but I’m wary of being taken advantage of. Should I run, or am I being overly cautious? Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

I’m realizing this post may come off as a humble brag, but I’m truly desiring to hear from others who’ve been in my shoes and how they navigated their entrepreneurship journey.

I work a cushy, but stressful software engineering position at a FAANG company. I’ve been here since 2018 after graduating college and slowly worked my way up to around a $350-400k annual total compensation (for this year & next). I’ve hit a rut in this job and it absolutely drains me, due to sheer working pressures and several other factors. I can probably push myself for another 6 months to a year at the very most until I’m going to lose the rest of my sanity.

For the past several months I’ve been working towards building mobile apps on the side. I’ve formed my LLC, built an iOS app, and publishing it soon. I plan to continue getting faster at this process and invest in influencer marketing (as well as organic marketing) to promote the apps. I’m targeting that if everything goes according to plan I should be able to hit $10-20k in monthly revenue by this time next year. 

What’s hard for me is knowing when to take the plunge. Currently I’m working on my apps in the morning before work, after work & during parts of the weekend. I can imagine as work pressures build up next year to get promoted (which I don’t want), I’ll have even less time to work on these apps. At that point, I may consider going full time on the apps for 3-6 months if I’m making at least 5-10k in revenue at that point to cover rent, monthly expenses etc.

However, for other previous golden handcuff entrepreneurs in high paying corporate jobs, how did you get over the pride of giving up so much compensation for the sake of personal freedom? I’ll add that I’m married with no kids, and while my spouse makes a great salary, I still feel a burden of giving up such a large chunk of our overall income.

I would love to hear others take at 1) At what point did you leave your cushy job, and 2) How to stop falling into the trap of golden handcuffs to fully pursue one’s dreams of entrepreneurship?

Update! The negotiation went really well and thankfully I didn't even have the opportunity to whine about my coworker's raise even if I'd wanted to (which you all successfully talked me out of)

My initial offer was $77,500 ($7k raise) after I'd asked for $90k. After telling him I needed 85k at the least, he said he'd have to "crunch the numbers". He came back with an offer of $82,500 but with the promise of increasing it again after the new fiscal year's overall budget is approved by the board (3% pool increase) and then an additional raise after that so that by the end of the fiscal year I'll be up to $90k.

It's a bit of an inconvenient timeline because it's just more and more to follow up with but ultimately, I'm happy with it. And I was surprised he got me up to my original ask.

Still waiting for it in writing. So I can't get too excited yet. But this is definitely better news than $7k.

Update: I was offered a BS raise. Should I tell my boss during negotiation that I know another colleague was offered the same raise for a fraction of the work?
