Just talk to him about it - many couples start in different tax brackets. There are other arrangements - pay proportionately based off your income - 20/80?

My husband makes more than three times what I do. His family is better off than mine but my parents are very upper middle class. For our whole relationship my husband has usually picked up the check and at the beginning turned down my offers to split. I will pay for smaller things like drinks at a bar, coffees, and occasionally more expensive meals. My husband owned our house before we got married; when I moved in, I asked if he wanted some money towards it and he laughed at me. I pay the electric bill and for other things. I do most of cooking and thus buy most groceries but he pays on the Costco trips.

Unless your boyfriend is expecting you to pay half, you’re likely over thinking it. Just ask him. If he loves you and is financially comfortable, he probably doesn’t care. Next time he suggests eating out, counter that you could stay home and cook and save a little money. Stop splitting the bills. Take turns paying. If he wants to go to an expensive restaurant, he can pay. You can more affordable places or cook at home.

It doesn't require an ultra high or rare job though.  Just reasonable income, spend less than you make invest the difference.  Use tax sheltering, buy and hold index funds, avoid trying to time the market or trade your way to fast money.

If you are reluctant to put this money into SGOV or a money market because they won’t keep up with inflation how would you feel if you put it into an equity mutual fund and we had a recession and your fund dropped?  Put it into SGOV.

SGOV yield is higher than inflation.  You are treading water.  This is exactly what you should do for money you need in a year or two.

The most important decision I made was marrying someone who shared similar views on money.  In our 25 year marriage we had one argument over money and the item in question was $165 but at the time we were super broke (we did not have the $165 lol).

Wealth is not just made by making sound investments, it's also made by avoiding self defeating decisions.

The biggest wealth killer most couple face are buying cars, buying too much house and credit card debt.  We have avoided those things.

We drive cars for decades and I could easily afford a BMW or whatever but instead my last purchase was a $35,000 truck.  We could afford a Lexus or other luxury SUV but we bought a Honda Passport for my wife 15 years ago instead.

If we qualified for a $600,000 home we bought a $250,000 one.  That way if either of us lost our job we'd have no problem making our payment.

Understanding the difference in a poor man's approach to wealth versus a wealthy man's approach to wealth has paid off for us.  Compounding gains over nearly 30 years buying boring ETFs and boring yet profitable stocks and making a few good real estate purchases over the years has put us in the 5% population.  I have never chased dips or meme stocks or made other attempts to make quick profits.

I am a project manager and my wife is a database person.  Neither of us makes surgeon money ha ha.

why did three cards close?  Was it because of inactivity?  losing 3 cards at once will definitely tank your score, specially if they are the oldest.  I have no idea as to your initial question, credit just seems like such a sham in scenarios like this.

Same principle for networking. You don't want to be a sycophant having 3mins superficial conversations with lots of people. You just need to get deep with one or two, actually connect as people, and they will go to bat for you.

ETA: Yeah just checked Vanguard and my all-time investment returns are only slightly higher than my starting annual salary at my first software job. Like I'm only 37 so that's nothing to sneeze at, but not something I could've done with a four-figure initial investment either.

Also 40 year old man, veteran, and federal worker. The main thing men need to hear and realize is you are more than your career. Don’t associate your value as a man simply to the dollars and cents you bring in. Don’t attribute your identity to a job or even a career. We all do it, and we need to stop doing it.

I would reframe this for yourself. Rather than focusing on what you could have done differently in the past I would instead focus on the opportunity you have now. You have enough money to live comfortably the rest of your life no matter what. You don’t need to stay retired - it’s a choice not an obligation- you have your health, time, and money to fall back on.

You mention you are very happy but the fact you are posting indicates you may feel you are lacking purpose and aren’t feeling fulfilled. 

First, I would consider therapy or personal coaching - this can help flesh out your next move or what’s nagging at you. Second to that, seek to network as well as connect with old friends and colleagues that you haven’t talked to in a while. Try to rediscover what you love and find new things you enjoy.

High yield savings account or CDs are the only answer for that short of a time scale in my opinion. That's what we did leading up to our house purchase a few years ago. The only thing in the market (non retirement) was for a used car purchase like 2-3 years in the future. Don't let greed get you caught up in a major loss and lose the house down payment. Your return will be way more through the stability of home ownership.

Gawd I'm old and boring.

Got laid off at 47.  Reinvented myself (technical college, unemployment, minimal paying jobs) and finally was able to turn things around in four years.

Something like that probably takes more than overnight to really impact your score.  The initial drop could have been something else, for example whoever issued the derogatory mark may have reported a 90 day late first.
  
My guess is that the derogatory mark had a delayed reaction on your credit and then your other creditors pulling your lines snowballed it.

Careerwise, I made my money running a digital advertising agency. Looking back on that, I enjoyed the challenge and the people I worked with, but making digital ads wasn't making the world a better place by any means. 

Now that I'm financially set for life, I still like to feel productive but I put some of my money towards startups that feel like a net positive for the world. One brings solar powered clean water filtration systems to villages in Africa. Another is bringing healthy soda to Europe. A honey company in Zimbabwe. None are going to be 100x investments, but it allows me to use some of my business acumen for things that feel more useful to people.

You strike me as a provider. You wanted to climb and make enough so that your family was never financially insecure and could pursue their dreams. I am very much the same way. 

In "typing" out loud to myself - I suppose very few people can ride two horses at once. Most people ride the nefarious horse long enough to be financially solvent then perhaps jump to the other horse. 

If there was a way to make money and make the world a better place, I'd be all ears..... This is why the human race is doomed to fail (someday hopefully in the way distant future).

I didn't know that Chinese retailers bought Meta ads, but guess that makes sense since it includes Facebook but also Instagram. 

The research note said that Chinese companies paid Meta/Facebook $18 billion in 2024 for ad revenue, which was 11% of Meta's total ad-revenue.

The note mentions that Beijing can instruct companies that are heavy spenders like Temu and Shein to pause ad spend with the American ad company, potentially costing Zuckerberg's ad giant up to $7 billion this year. I guess this is similar to telling the airlines to not accept Boeing planes anymore?  
I wonder if Google will also experience ad-cuts?

My mom had an auto loan for a car that we do not intend to keep. Am I (beneficiary) responsible for paying the remaining balance? Here's where I'm at, I need to take her death certificate to the bank in which she financed the auto loan, and then what? Everything is still in her name, mortgage loan, house, all utility bills, credit cards, auto loan, student loans, car insurance, etc. I just don't want to say the wrong thing to the wrong entity and be in financial ruin. My husband and I were living with her in her home at the time she passes away, and she said the house goes to me. I am an only child and she had no spouse. What am I responsible for paying back vs debts that will be written off?

You know when you're doing your taxes, the IRS only deals with whole numbers. As a result, values of $49.34 get entered as "49", etc.

Just trying to be realistic here. It’s been years since the market was good. It’s been 3 years since 2022.

I know it hasn’t been super long but seriously do we see an end in sight? Because I don’t. The market is still shit, people are still getting laid off, job stability is still at an all time low.

Where’s the silver lining? Because I don’t see one.

Are these jobs permanently gone? Let’s be real with ourselves. Manufacturing jobs were outsourced a few decades ago in the US and literally never came back. 

Now I know this sub can be a little racist sometimes towards outsourced engineers, but here’s a news flash: you are competing against everyone. You’re telling me there’s no good engineers in India that don’t speak fluent English? Please.

American engineers aren’t special. Companies have figured out during the remote years that outsourcing is still easier than ever.

Now do I think all of us will get outsourced? No. But will it become manufacturing? Maybe the extremely complex things like computer chips are manufactured in first world countries like Korea/taiwan. And everything else is in 3rd world. 

What is the average joe in the US going to do? 

I haven’t even brought up AI, that can be a whole other post. All I have to say is chatGPT is not replacing us anytime soon but I will admit it’s scary how good it can be. Is it perfect? Nope. But it’s still really good. 

Is been years since the market has been good, and we aren’t even close to recovery. Is this permanent?

I’m turning 40 this year, and I’m feeling the weight of uncertainty more than I ever have. Just two days after being promoted to manage an audiovisual communications department in DC, which is a role that I moved across the country for, I was told that my position is being eliminated. No sugarcoating, no time to adjust. C’est la vie.

I’m a military veteran with nearly a decade of federal service. Before that, I worked in film and television. I’ve got an MBA, multiple certifications, and a solid track record of leadership and high-performance. But none of that seems to matter in the job market I’m facing now.

I’ve applied to hundreds of roles in the past few months. From communications, production, to management, etc. and have barely heard anything back. I know the private sector sees my resume and probably thinks I don’t fit the mold. They’re probably right. I haven’t spent my career climbing the corporate comms ladder. I took a different route. 

I am not complaining, but I am scared. 

I’m staring down 40 with a 7-month-old daughter, no stable income, and no clear direction. I’ll do whatever it takes to support my family, but I genuinely don’t know what that should be. A total career pivot? More school? Freelance work?

Has anyone made a successful jump from government/creative work to a completely new career later in life? What industries or paths are realistic and worth pursuing at this point?

Any perspective is welcome. I just need to know this kind of reinvention is still possible.

That shifted everything for me - in business and in life.

As a business development guy who studies psychology and helps leaders build brands, here’s the truth: People don’t remember your pitch. They remember how they felt in your presence.

Brand that. Not your product.

I’m sitting on $50k in cash that I have saved up for a down payment on a house. I’d like to wait until my girlfriend and I are married so that we can buy together. So likely won’t be buying for at least a year.

I don’t want to throw it into VT as the market could crash in a year. At the same time, the dollar is losing value so putting it into SGOV likely won’t keep up with inflation. It just feels like there are no right answers right now. No matter what, I’m going to lose money. Anyone else feeling the same way?

Edit: Thanks for the reality check, everyone. I needed that. I started the process of transferring the money back into my HYSA. If we decide not to buy now and instead renew our lease, I will put it into a 1 year CD and forget about it.

I would like to hear from people dating across socioeconomic classes. I'm a woman and have been dating someone (a guy) for about three months. I'm hesitant to continue with the relationship because I think being in different classes will ultimately break us apart, and I don't want to prolong it. 

Even though I sometimes get frustrated with how far away I am from FI, I'm proud of where I am. I came from white trash but I have a graduate degree; the only debt I have is my mortgage; I financially provide for a disabled family member; and I did it all in spite of my background, not because of it.    

He probably makes about three times as much as I do, and his family is well off. He suggests that we do things (like frequently going out to eat) and I always split the bill or send him money for half because I don't want to be seen as a parasite. I forsee a future where he suggests going on trips and I can't because it's not in my budget or I don't have the flexibility with work. If we were ever to live together, I would not be able to contribute to the same degree. My friends say if it pans out the way I fear, someone who chooses money over a person isn't worth being with anyway.  But I don't see it like that - it's more like incompatible backgrounds. I'm scared to have a conversation about it: one friend says to "not put that out there" and that if I make it a problem then it will become a problem (it's actually seemed to have happened in the past).

Dating across class

I’m in the throes of solopreneurship. Bootstrapping a business, carrying the vision, the labor, the fear, and the hope all by myself. Some days, I feel like no one truly understands what I’m trying to build. Not friends. Not family. Not even the people I’m building it for. It’s lonely. It’s exhausting. And some days, I question everything.

But here’s the advice I’d give to any aspiring entrepreneur, especially the ones out there with a fire in their belly and negative $8,000 in their bank account:

Don’t give up.
Do it tired.
Do it scared.
Do it broke.
Do it misunderstood.

Because the world doesn’t need more of the same.
It needs new ideas.
It needs bold creativity.
It needs you.

For the misunderstood entrepreneurs: keep going.

So I had recieved a derogatory mark on my credit for a 50 dollar bill which I had proof was paid. Overnight it tanked my credit score 127 points, which seems outrageous considering I was at 812. I disputed the bill and got the derogatory mark removed, but instead of my points gaining the 127 points, it showed my derogatory mark being removed took my score down another 56 points. Then 3 of my oldest credit cards with 10k+ credit immediately closed my accounts, which reduced my score by 47 points.

So now I cant get any credit cards since my credit went from 812, down to 582, for something thats not even my fault.

Why would getting a derogatory mark removed cause my credit score to avalanche from 812 to 582?

55 and fatfired, have posted here a couple of times before. I'm very happy in my life now. Very. I don't  worry about money (NW \~$9M) and have time to focus on things that are important (relationships, service) and personal passions (languages, racquet sports, gardening). That said, I've been thinking quite a bit lately (and discussing with my spouse) whether I would do it all differently knowing what I know now - e.g. pursue a very different career path and deprioritize money. Have appreciated the ability to think out loud here and grateful for all of the advice and kind comments, hope there is some value in the below for all of those still in (and even those out of) the grind.

The backstory: I come from a  financially insecure background (upper middle class suburb but father went bankrupt), started working in tech in 1995. I  put myself through college/grad school and was able to eliminate student debt and make a nice chunk of money by 26. Loved my first 2-3 years (early internet/e-commerce). Started on the tech side and moved across to the business side. Over my \~25 years, I became less and less focused on doing things I personally believed in and more focused on making the next move, sustaining/growing my earnings and navigating train wrecks. Mostly worked in big tech, never super senior but generally found things that were novel and interesting to do while maintaining earnings. I only worked for 2 small companies/startups due to an intense focus on financial stability for my family (and perhaps some risk aversion). Looking back, I have come to a few conclusions:

1. Working in tech and focusing on $ led me to  focus on the next opportunity, versus developing a vocation. My father in law is a physician who has been able to stay engaged his lifelong focus area (cancer) well into his 80's.  Once I stepped back from tech, my market value and relevance plummeted quickly and I have no real connection to tech today.

2. In retrospect my work contribution to humanity was making more money for very profitable companies. I started by working on things that were good for people but in sum, I'm not a big believer that what I spent a large amount of time on made the world a better place.

3. The companies I worked for were Darwinian - forced 10-20% attrition, at times abusive approaches to customers and partners. I think the combination of being in that environment over the long haul as well as being a high earner contributed to me being a less empathetic, less present and open person that I would have liked to be...and I'm being generous there.

4. Related to the above, the stress of those environments was very connected to a number of bad habits I've been undoing over the last few years - using alcohol/weed as an escape, unhealthy eating, grinding teeth etc.

I'm obviously picking out the downsides of choices I made. There were other benefits in addition to the $ - friendships I made, experiences I had (I worked abroad for a number of years). I am very content and grateful for the life I have now - I'm still relatively young, healthy and frankly very fortunate. I've been able to ensure that my family can pursue their own dreams, which is a big one.

That said, I do wish I would have had the capacity and courage to step back probably 15 years ago and ask myself if this was really what I wanted from life. It would probably have been terrifying to do so (especially with 3 small kids) and difficult to have the required perspective. But as much as I respect the person who ate all of the stress to get to this point, I would have liked that person to think bigger and be bolder.

Was it worth it? Maybe not.

One of the stated goals for the current trade war is to build more industrial capacity in the United States. So far there doesn't seem to be much of it happening.
