BTW, just a tactical piece of advice: 

Before you wire the whole thing (if this is what you end up doing), please, *please* do a test wire of a small amount (like $20, or even $2000) and verify that it worked well and smoothly.    

Avoid the nightmare stories here of people whose wires went lost in the ether and took weeks to track it down, because they wired a large sum the very first time they ever did it, to a new recipient.  Eat the small fee to send a test first.

Lol, this is me right now, and has been for the past year.

Golden handcuffs are real. My job pays amazingly well, great benefits, full remote, fairly chill. But through various changes in my role, it has become entirely misaligned with my interests and passions. I'm officially FI, but am falling victim to one-more-year syndrome, but primarily because I'm in the last year of my big sign-on grant. I'm trying to tough it out for one more year, derisk retirement significantly in the process, and then pull the trigger.

Yep. Have talked to my therapist about this quite a bit. As long as you know the trade off you are making, then it can be ok. But you need to find ways to enjoy the grind at least some. That can mean better work life balance, setting boundaries, prioritizing working out, saying no to things, etc.

Depends on your financial situation a little bit. If you need the money, you can say that you have to charge regular prices. 

If not, give them a discount and do really good work. Think of it as a way to get referrals. They're way more likely to refer you to someone else, compared to a regular client.

Graduated spring 2023, laid in bed depressed for a year and a half doing nothing and taking horrible care of myself. Started with baby steps going to the gym for routine then added in some leetcode, personal projects and system design. After 8 months of grinding every day and about 35 interviews I finally landed a dream position as a founding backend engineer at an SF startup! I started from nothing and rebuilt it all, I am so proud of myself. It gets better guys, keep ur chin up :)

I’m 35, in a solid job — good pay, career growth potential, big corporate — but I’ve completely lost the motivation to “go further.” I don’t care about climbing the ladder anymore. I’m over the office politics, the meetings, the culture, all of it. I even go the least as possible to the office as i find it a waste if energy and time. 

Now I’m just here to collect my paycheck, save, invest, and hit my FIRE number (just reached it but would feel more comfortable to have about 20/30% more of NW in case). That’s it. I can feel it in how I interact with coworkers too — they’re passionate and believe in what they do, talk about promotions, new challenges and I’m just thinking, this is all a waste of time all i want it to hit my FIRE number ber and if I loose this job I dont care and I dont even want a new one as it would be the same crap anyways.

Hey everyone, I’m 33M, married with two kids (ages 10 and 6), and I’ve been living in Connecticut since 2011. I'm a U.S. citizen and work full-time in the trucking industry, earning about $60,000/year.

Back in 2019, I used profits from trading stocks to help buy a house in my home country in the Caribbean. I put down about $130,000 cash and took a mortgage for the remaining ~$130K. It was actually my mother’s idea—she had plans around the property too, but sadly, she passed away a year later. That’s part of why the property means something to me, but at the same time, it hasn’t been a great financial move since then.

Right now, that home is worth around $425,000, and I still owe about $130,000. I’ve been renting it on Airbnb, but after mortgage, HOA fees, utilities, housekeeping, and management, I only make around $600/month profit, and even less in off-seasons. It’s been stressful to manage remotely, and there’s added pressure now—my HOA has threatened to shut down Airbnb rentals, so the future income is uncertain.

Worse, the mortgage is variable and currently at 10.5% interest, with no fixed-rate or refinance options available locally. That rate has climbed steadily, making the house even less financially viable.

Meanwhile in the U.S., I’ve got about $30K in credit card and personal loan debt, and I’m currently renting. So I’m thinking about selling the Caribbean house, paying off the mortgage, and walking away with about $265K net.

Here’s my plan if I sell:

Put 20% down on a $66K)

Pay off all my debts (~$30K)

Start college funds for my kids

Invest ~$75K in index funds or CDs

Keep ~$20K in high-yield savings for emergencies

Use income from work to build a future home back home slowly, debt-free


I’d be left with no debt except a U.S. mortgage, a stable home for my family, and room to save and grow.

I like having something back home, but with everything considered—the limited income, rising interest, remote stress, and life here—it’s feeling more like a weight than an asset.

Would you sell and start fresh? Or am I giving up long-term value too soon?

Should I sell my home in the Caribbean to buy a house in the U.S. and become debt-free?

So if I put 400 in every month with 3% annual increase for inflation. I would be a millionaire by the time I’m 50?(20 Y/O now).

That is assuming that it went perfectly for 30 years on a 10% annual increase.

That seems very achievable so that’s why I feel like I am missing something.

S&P 500. Is it really that easy or am I missing something?

income is $330k per year

I max our my 401k every year, HSA, and also do a backdoor roth conversion.

I have around $210k across the 401k/HSA/IRA all in FIdelity.  I then have $218k invested in Robinhood (yes, I know it's not the best, but I just don't feel like transferring assets right now and I enjoy the 4% rate on their cash savings if you have gold.  

Across all of the assets in both my retirement accounts (which I'll include the HSA in this, since I never use it), plus the brokerage account, I'm at only $20k cash, $17k in crypto (95% BTC;   4% ETH;  1% altcoins);   then literally everything else is VOO across all accounts.

It has performed incredibly well over the past few years.    

I waited too long to start saving for retirement.  :(  I'll be 40 next year.   I only started my Robinhood account in 2022 and since then, I'm actually up $48k as of right now.

Why should I change up my strategy since the S&P 500 has done so well for me over the past \~4 years?   If anyone can explain, and tell me how to instead rebalance, that would be great.  If I do anything, I would prefer vanguard since their fees are so low on their funds.

Why diversify when S&P 500 has had such good returns?

I [30F] was diagnosed with cancer in December 2024. Because the treatments available in the US are limited for the type of cancer I have, I chose to seek medical care from outside the US. This means it’s not covered by insurance. In April 2025, I sold my house (moved in with my parents) and paid for the initial treatment entirely. I am fortunate that my parents agreed to pay the remaining medical costs for further rounds of treatment. Once treatment is completed, total paid by my parents will be in the six figure range. However, now my step-dad is asking about my income to be able to claim me as a dependent for the 2025 tax year. I worked full-time up until June 2025 and then worked part time until July 2025. So I know I made over the threshold to qualify as a dependent. He’s now asking if he can repay my wages to have my W-2 adjusted, so he can claim me. I understand that there are significant tax advantages for my step-dad to be able to claim me to recover some of the medical costs (approximately $56k), but adjusting my income and making my W-2 worthless feels WRONG. I would forfeit my taxes, any buying/loan power, and morally it doesn’t feel right. But I also know that I’m still recovering from cancer and I would be SOL if my parent pulled funding from further treatment. I feel like a pawn. What would you do in my situation?

God I'm tired as hell with everything, essentially, its been months after I started freelancing( currently i only do it on Fiverr) but i just have gotten no work at all in any way, Ive used all the things and ways possible and have only found people messaging me to try and scam me, I feel completely lost, and now I think I'm just completely in the wrong niche or just doing something very wrong in general. Ever since I started working, I have been saving up and investing so I can be financially independent. After years of dating red flags, I found a nice caring guy who treats me like a princess. We were aligned with goals too of having a house and family someday.

I’m 27 years old. I’m still unsure about what I want to do in life. I have an associates degree in computer science. I’m currently working two jobs. My first job is as a Patient Care coordinator and I make $20 an hour. My second job is dominos pizza Fridays and Saturdays and I make an extra $1500 a month. 


I’m debt free. I have 10k in savings. I don’t want to work two jobs for the rest of my life but I’m not sure where to go from here.

Hello, so my mother lives currently live in Mexico city. My father has passed away. So as a result my mother would like to give me my inheritance (cash) now so she doesn’t have to worry about it in the future as her health declines.

I’m a permanent resident of the United States with a chase bank account.

I am not aiming this post at everyone - I'm just curious if anyone has noticed the same mental crutch I have. 

I work in tech and I really hate my job. It's starting to feel like the nature of the work itself is the problem, not the company or coworkers or anything like that. I understand that work isn't supposed to be fun, but I am feeling like I fundamentally don't like this type of work. I won't get into the details - this isn't a career advice subreddit - but I feel like sometimes I use the principals of FIRE to justify staying in this job. 

I make a great salary, and staying in tech is definitely my best shot at increasing that salary - by quite a lot. I am only 25, no student debt (thank you Mom & Dad!), saving a lot of money while my life is relatively cheap. When I consider switching to a career I actually like, I find myself going over the retirement plan, the nest-egg-before-kids plan, the salary potential I have, etc. I promise myself that I only have to stick it out for a decade or so. I know that's not a good way to approach life, but I am naturally risk-averse and somewhat opposed to change. 

So - have any of y'all found yourself justified staying in a job you hate just for the FIRE plan?

There are concerns that this will cause a major downshift in housing development and that landlords that are heavily exposed to rent-stabilized units will be driven deeper into distress. But then separately there are major real estate owners who may be threatened by other aspects of Mamdani's real estate vision. For example, he has promised to, in some instances, expedite approvals for new buildings, which could take away the competitive edge from major building owners that know best how to work the approval process. But there are also players in the real estate industry who are excited about new opportunities. If housing production does, in fact, slow down, that could mean higher rent on market-rate units. And if Mamdani significantly expands the supply of free childcare in the city, then that could present an opportunity for some owners of commercial real estate.
