The only piece of advice that I want to offer is that you shouldn't do a 401k payout. Look into rolling it into an IRA. You don't want to start your 401k from scratch again and the penalties from taking from your 401k are massive. Only consider taking from the IRA if you fully use your severance.

Really understand the business, how what you are working on impacts the business and the ROI. Soft skills are just as important as hard skills.

You’re going to naturally see more people retiring later because the longer you wait the easier it is to achieve since you have more time to do it and less risk to price into the number.

I retired 18 months ago at age 40. My wife RE'ed a couple of years before that. I can't say we won't go back to work or something. She does a lot at the kid's schools. But honestly, it feels ridiculous to think I would have to go back to work because I was bored or something. There's always so much to do. I'm busier now than ever.

We do have two kids. When they leave the house, boredom may be more likely.

The secret is to do the FI part as early as possible.  Then, with the stress of being forced to work removed, you can enjoy working more.  Knowing you can simply get up and leave, or move to a better job is great.  Take a sabbatical.  Do some consulting.  One day, just don't work anymore.  Volunteer. Vacation. I did FI about 49, and retired at 51. Did part time consulting for 8 years. Slowly stopping working for money.  15 years later, I'm still working a couple hours a week when not vacationing.

Do not limit yourself to tech and tech adjacent companies, where tech is the product.

There are plenty of jobs where IT is a support function for the main business and these jobs are a lot more stable than tech product jobs.

Like others said- you often get exposed to all this at large companies as well. So it's gonna be more company dependent than size dependent.

The bigger issue I've seen is that startups often will just get it done in the most bare bones way because everything is on fire and everything needs to be done. Frequently startups will expose you to lots of things- which is good- but often times things will be done in the most horrific half assed manners.

Logistics would be the industry I’d target. Lots of software jobs outside of traditional tech and the analytical skills carry over.

Startup life is tough. It is not all fun. It takes a lot of work and you might feel alone. 

You have to keep going even when things are hard.

Hardest part - divorce. It was overdue but the startup was just an accelerator.   
  
Resilience:  
1. The simple fact that every day I was learning more than ever (no one can take that away from you)  
2. The realisation that the wins feel amazing just because the suffering is so intense  
  
Someone can tell you that the journey is the goal. But that doesn't help. But once you feel it you will know why you do it. And thats magic.

To start off I live in Greece,24 years old, and I will provide some context for those unfamiliar. In Greece the minimum wage per month is 880€ , if you make above 1.5k you are considered to be doing very well. I have a good software engineering job for my age paying around 1.8k per month. My plan was to move abroad some time soon so it gets a significant pump. My family is kinda wealthy and from inherentance I got 4 buildings and 2 houses. The 3 buildings rent for 1.3k per month and the other one for 1.5k per month. The one house is generating around 800€ per month and the other one is where my parents were living.

I knew I would get something but I got way more than I expected because apparently my parents were fighting a lot with my brother.

All in all I will be making around 8k per month which is A LOT for Greece. I don’t know what to do with this much money, I was never a big spender and with my paycheck I could still save 1k per month. I thought about dropping 5-6k every month on S&P or stocks. Hey everyone, feeling pretty defeated right now and could use some perspective. I've been at my current company (mid size tech firm) for about 3 years now as a business analyst. I've consistently gotten good reviews, taken on extra projects, and even helped train new hires. But I've been passed over for promotion to senior analyst twice now in the past 18 months.

The first time they told me I needed more "leadership experience." So I volunteered to lead our quarterly reporting process and started mentoring junior staff. The second time last month, they said they wanted someone with "more technical skills" even though the job posting didn't mention any specific tech requirements that I don't already have.

I'm starting to think maybe I'm just not cut out for moving up here, or maybe I'm missing something obvious? The people who got promoted both times were good candidates but honestly didn't seem more qualified than me. One of them had been here only 18 months.

I have some money on the side just in case I need to make a career move, but I really like the company culture and my team. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Did you eventually get promoted or did you end up leaving? Really questioning if I should stick it out or start looking elsewhere.

Any advice would be appreciated, this whole thing has been pretty rough on my confidence.

I don’t understand how it can be up 40% despite missing earnings. Yes I know they projected 500 billion revenue but still… 40%…? Is this just hype around AI/cloud? Or are investors pricing in something much bigger long term? I get that guidance matters more than a single earnings miss, but it feels extreme. Also, does this then necessarily mean there’s going to be a prolonged period of heightened volatility around Oracle and seeing whether this stratospheric revenue projection is met, or is this new price range likely to be the norm for the near future?

Disclaimer: This post is on behalf of my mother who doesn't have reddit and would not know how to use it.

For context, my mother is single and an immigrant (we're in the US). We've always been poor and frankly financially illiterate, so when it comes to saving for something like retirement, no one knows what we're doing. Only recently have I started to  get an understanding of what it takes to retire even somewhat comfortably, and I'm truly terrified for my mother.

She grew up in a culture where the concept of "retirement" wasn't really a thing. If anything, your kids were your retirement plan. I am of course willing to help, but I will be starting medical school next fall and it will be at least a decade until I am making enough money to support anyone else. I have a sister who will likely be making money sooner, but of course she has her own life plans. For obvious reasons, we want our mother to have some sort of financial cushion during her retirement that isn't just a chunk of our income.

But there's nothing. No 401k, no IRA, nothing. To make matters worse, she recently was the victim of a scam and lost the little savings she did have. This was really the wake up call for me when I realized that my mother unfortunately just does not have the knowledge and intuition to make good financial decisions.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure that I do either. I have no idea where to start. I'm trying to read through post on this subreddit but a lot of the advice seems targeted to younger people who still have time. My mom is theoretically 10 years out from retirement. She will almost certainly have to retire later but she is a nurse and I'm not sure if she will be able to meet the physical demands for very long.

Edit: If it's relevant, current income is about 100k but it feels like she's working paycheck to paycheck. This is especially true after the scam. I feel like soon I'll have to do an audit of all her finances to see where the money is going. She's also taking care of my elderly grandmother.

What’s a career move that costs $0 but can boost your earning potential?

It has been a career bucket list item to work at a startup that is just getting off the ground.  I joined as a staff engineer on a central platform team with one other engineer.  Eventually the team grew to 4 engineers.  As startups tend to do the financials struggled and the team was let go.  However with everything I learned I could confidently speak about almost all parts of platform engineering with hands-on confidence I did 1 interview which resulted in 1 offer.  [Note: It was a company I had previously worked for and knew lots of people.  This isn't a brag about getting a job in a struggling market so this context is important.]  Here is some of my experiences.

Working at large companies things tend to be somewhat figured out.  A typical question I would get when interviewing new engineers for roles on the team was about what the most difficult part of the job is.  My honest answer was always there was me and another engineer.  If we didn't know the answer that means you have to figure it out because no one else at the company knows.  These are some of the parts of the job I always knew about but lacked working hands-on:


**DNS** - At every company I worked for DNS was managed by another team, typically SREs.  I knew about various record types and all that and I knew how to dig a DNS record but here we had to setup the R53 ourselves, purchase the domains ourselves, setup the subdomains ourselves and setup all the record ourselves.  We had to figure out how to manage this in a sustainable way so DNS isn't spread across a bunch of AWS accounts and do that in a secure fashion.


**CICD** - Of course every engineer oftentimes interfaces with CICD.  My experience was typically extending some scripts someone else wrote to do most of the hard stuff.  The cluster was owned and operated by someone else.  But we had to figure out what CICD to use, how to integrate it into our pipelines, how to build our services, how to house containers, how to deploy the services.  There was no service builder helper to extend it had to start from scratch.


**App Startup** - The companies I worked for already had app startup figured out.  There was some framework you'd implement which would give you logging, metrics and some form of observability for free out of the box.  But we had to figure out how to get these apps running and build out this framework ourselves.  This even included selecting which language to use for our platform, how to structure the project and coding standards.


**Infrastructure** - Every place loves to interview you on scalability but I've personally always found it somewhat abstracted away from me as the developer.  My job was to crunch the code to make my container and it was someone else's job to scale it up or at least provide a convenient way to do so - usually some core tech team.  At the very least usually stuff before it hits your code is owned and operated by someone else.  Now again we leveraged AWS so lots of it is batteries included.  The API Gateways scale, if we're using serverless it scales, if we're using a managed database it scales.  But not everything was managed.  So we typically had to write out the entire infrastructure diagrams ourselves and find scale points.  This allowed me to walk into system design interviews not just spewing out memorization about various scaling techniques I actually had to live and breathe it for a long time.  Questions about trade offs and decisions were now extremely easy to talk about because these were things I actually had to solve personally.


**IAC** - I lacked a lot of Terraform know-how going into the job.  So even simple questions which I now know as Terraform 101 such as "How do I save this state file from my ephemeral CICD node?" were complete unknowns.  We had to figure out basically everything Terraform from scratch.  Companies I've worked for in the past usually didn't expose Terraform to me directly.  They were hybrid bare metal and public cloud options.  So we had some form of IAC but it was always proprietary to the company, usually owned and managed by someone else and typically pared down.  So this gave me direct exposure to how to describe my infrastructure as code including things like I said about how to save state files, how to tag my resources, how to manage int/dev/stage/prod environments and all of that.  My previous experience was just writing some YAML and it was someone else's job to interpret all of that.


**Observability** - Like I said previously usually this is something included in the app framework of the company.  But this gave me experience setting up Grafana (our tool of choice), pumping or replicating logs to it, setting up collectors for metrics, setting up alerting and all the dashboarding.  The alerting and dashboarding I'm sure most people have had experience with but usually for logging and metrics I'd just have to inject something into my application and it "just worked" without having to think about it too terribly much.


This is a long winded post and not a question at all but more a bit of advice.  If you are given the opportunity to work at a very early stage start up I highly recommend it.  My end result was the same as most early start ups - I got let go.  However I feel it made me a much more employable engineer that now can talk about times I actually built a lot of components that go into a backend platform.  I don't need to talk about these things in the abstract, which of course is still important to understand, but I can speak to them in the concrete now.  It was a fantastic growing and learning experience for me, personally.

Working at a startup taught me more in 3 years than 10+ years at larger companies. I wish I did it sooner.

I suppose those with best soft skills could go into any direction, but probably would be best in sales or something. Outside of sales, what else?

# Great Thriving Retired (GT-R) Life

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine retiring before the age of 60. Yet here I am, having retired at 42. Growing up in France in the 1980s, the legal retirement age was 60, and that number was ingrained in my mind as the level 60- the mythical retirement level.

It still feels surreal that I retired before my mother, who, at 67, continues to work part-time as a baker. In a world where many people work into their late 60s or even 70s, I often find myself reflecting on how I managed to retire so early. For the record, I still haven’t told her. Being raised by Chinese immigrant parents who fled war and communism and worked tirelessly their whole lives to support their families, I feel extremely guilty and haven’t yet mustered the courage to tell my mom. This is a discussion I’ll leave for another blog.

Let me take you through my story.

As I mentioned, I grew up in France, a country where people “work to live,” unlike in the U.S., where people seem to “live to work.” Every day, I saw my American coworkers grinding at their desks during lunch—or skipping it altogether. And vacations? Taking two weeks off at a time was considered a luxury. I would often envy my French friends who could take an entire month off to travel every summer.

It seemed like everyone was caught in a never-ending rat race. I was guilty of it too, but working to enjoy life has always been my personal compass. Another guiding principle of mine is that since we only have this one life, we should focus on what truly matters—helping others along the way. For me, that meant dedicating my professional career to helping cancer patients in the biopharmaceutical industry. Over 20 years, I worked with some of the top pharmaceutical companies, and knowing that my work helped save lives was incredibly fulfilling and rewarding.

When I started this journey in 2006, I signed up for healthcare benefits for the first time and discovered the 401(k) retirement plan with company matching. Being so young, retirement was a vague and distant notion, but I still contributed up to the company match—after all, it was free money! I also used the portfolio investment management service to manage my account, as I wasn’t well-versed in what I should be investing in. It turns out, this was a great decision.

Soon after came the housing bubble that burst in 2009. Before the crash, I saw people buying insanely expensive homes like they were buying bread. I couldn’t understand how folks could afford such pricey houses. When home prices came crashing down, they finally seemed more reasonable, and it was the perfect opportunity to buy my first home in the Bay Area. I rented out one room to help pay the mortgage.

I got married in 2010 and was laid off for the first time during my honeymoon in Cancun. This was my first sour taste of corporate life.

Being young, I quickly rebounded, but working in the pharma industry, this became a repeating cycle. Whether it was because of a failed clinical trial, bad company investment, patent cliffs, or cost-saving measures, there were always layoffs every so often. I wasn’t always impacted, but it still sucked. A lesson I learned is that **nobody is irreplaceable—so prioritize and keep investing in yourself first.**

In 2018, I attended a conference and learned about CAR-T, a novel cancer treatment at the time, and decided to join a new cell therapy startup based in Seattle. Although I loved my current job, this new professional challenge was one I couldn’t pass up. It was also financially one of the best moves of my career. By joining the startup, I received a generous sign-on bonus in the form of stock options and RSUs, on top of a 15% pay increase. Annual RSUs were a new perk to me, and they helped accelerate my net worth quickly. The company also had a relocation package, and I took the opportunity to buy a second home in Bellevue, WA. This startup turned out to be a biotech unicorn in my field. Our breakthrough product became the third FDA-approved therapy on the market. I sold some of the company stock to diversify my portfolio.

My wife and 5-year-old daughter stayed back in California, and for two years, I could only see them every couple of months. I kept asking myself: **Was missing out on my daughter’s cutest years for financial gain really worth it?**

Then, in 2020, COVID hit, and I was able to work remotely from California and finally be with my family again for two years. It was also a great time to refinance our mortgage to a ridiculously low rate. After the world opened back up, my wife was able to join me in Washington by taking a pay cut in exchange for a fully remote position. During that time, real estate prices shot up, and we made significant financial gains on both of our homes.

Like many people, COVID made me rethink the purpose of life and what’s truly important. I’ve seen young people leave this world far too soon. One of them was a coworker I used to sit across from at work. His name was John. He would often stay late at the office like I did. One day, I came back from vacation and learned that he had suddenly passed away in his late 40s.

**Not being able to enjoy retirement became my greatest fear.**

Fast forward to 2025, the start-up was eventually gulped by big pharma, and  I was impacted by yet another layoff—my whole team was axed. I received a nice severance package, having stayed nearly 7 years at the company. Worried about the job market, I ran the numbers to see where we stood financially. I had just bought my dream car—a Nissan GT-R—which came with a high monthly payment.

That’s when I got a big surprise…

Not only were we doing well financially—we had already achieved financial independence, just like the popular **FIRE** (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement promotes. We had reached the two-comma club in **liquid assets alone** by consistently investing in our 401(k)s for 20 years.

So here I am—**retired at 42** and stepping into a brand-new phase of life.

I look forward to seeing what the future holds. I want to spend more time with the family, enjoy my GT-R and do more travel, especially go on off-roading adventures in the PNW. I want to invest more in my personal health and continue learning about finance. From a financial standpoint, I’m looking into rebalancing our portfolio with the **three-bucket investment strategy**, since our after-tax investments are currently underweight.

Layoff to FIRE- How I Retired at 42

Just got laid off yesterday. I was making right at 100K for the past two months, was making 87K for the past two years. Currently planning my wedding which is in six months, and the recent raise was helping me cushion up our wedding payments. Fiancé makes about 85K and we recently got legally married, so I can be under his insurance if my cobra turns out to be too expensive. 

I have a severance payout coming soon of about 23K before taxes and about 19K before taxes from my 401K payout. About 3K in debt that I’ve been actively paying off, but otherwise also have about 3 months worth of expenses. 

Trying to plan how to manage the incoming money. I already have some emergency savings but obviously wanna build that up more. But looking for advice on how I can prioritize things and let this money help us for the future. After marriage we of course are wanting to look into getting a house together and me a new car, but we’re kinda adulting for the first time and figuring this all out😅

Just got laid off and just starting my personal finance journey

I interviewed with a well reputed founder - whose previous AI startup was acquired by one of the big tech companies.Thier new company has high 7 digits funding.

I finished all the interview rounds and they asked for 1 week paid trial. I worked for 2 days and gave them the results and was waiting for next set of tasks. They just ghosted after telling that the role is closed. No pay for 2 days. I took leave from my current work to do this.

Is this betrayal common in SF ?

I see a lot of people who’s achieve FI and retire early between the ages of 55-60 in these subs. When I use to hear if FIRE years ago it was people in their 30s-40s retiring. Slowly and little by little those people (online and in real life) either went back to work, found a second career, a side hustle, left the country to afford the retirement, etc. It appeared to me that the RE didn’t work out well for some of them whether because of the money, inflation, or boredom or something else. I see people ask a lot what your FIRE number is. I’m curious what your retirement age is? And why?

**TL;DR:** Built an AI tool that spots market changes before they go mainstream. Sharing lessons learned and looking for feedback.

Hey entrepreneurs,

Like many of you, I got tired of always being reactive to market changes instead of proactive. So I decided to build something about it.

**The backstory:** I noticed that major business disruptions (supply chain issues, regulatory changes, tech breakthroughs) always have early signals they just get buried in noise. Started wondering if AI could filter through that noise better than humans.

**What I built:** Deeptracker\~ai - monitors 14,000+ companies and uses AI to spot early warning patterns. Think of it as having a research team that never sleeps.

**Lessons learned building this:**

1. **Data is everything** \- News is too late. Real insights come from filings, patents, hiring patterns, supply contracts
2. **Users want simple** \- My first version was way too complex. Had to dumb it down significantly
3. **Validation is crucial** \- False positives kill trust instantly

**Current results:**

* Caught recent EV battery material shortages 6 weeks early
* Flagged regulatory changes before they hit tech stocks
* Predicted several industry layoffs before announcements

**What I'm struggling with:**

* Pricing model (B2B vs consumer?)
* Which industries to focus on first
* How to explain complex AI predictions simply

What is the one, two or three, stock aside from meme, pump and dumps etc that you are the most bullish one. It could be sector based. Industry. Or even recent thematic.

For me. I can't see a world where $GOOGL doesn't win. The recent oracle earnings was a good indication of price action in the cloud space and possibilities for Google cloud to grow at crazy pace with its TpU advantage.

Sector would be cloud and infra. So $amzn, $googl $msft. Then neo clouds like $crwv ( coreweave).
