A nuclear engineer I know retired to run a wine shop with his wife. They did that happily for over 30 years. Not sure that it was super profitable, but they liked it.

Start looking. Make sure you use him as a reference and get a letter of recommendation, just to have in your files. 

Ask him for any contacts or job leads. Ask any of the other higher ups you know if they have any contacts or leads.

Do not delay the job search. Get your resume updated ASAP. Reach out to your school's career department for help with the job search.

It's Sam Altman who just like Elon Musk has always had a vested interest in hyping up his business. 

If I were to put money on it this is a calculated response to the weak jobs numbers and the anticipated rate cuts from the fed. 

He doesn't want OpenAI to be blamed for the weak jobs even though it's the current excuse du jour of the executive world for the current sweeping layoffs. He does want people to continue buying his product and hoping that one day if they get good with the tool they'll get a job.

I personally think it's PR speak BS. Graduates are getting slaughtered in this market and their degrees are predicated on 4 years ago or longer employment market. Not today's employment market. Dude just doesn't want his shiny LLM company to get blamed and is slapping some spin on it.

As a millennial I think he's full of it and I think his vision is a joke. Just like Musk colonizing mars in our lifetime. BS. He just doesn't want to be the face for what's happening. After all if the future is so bright why are all the big names in LLM's currently building bunkers and scratching their heads on how to keep their staff in line....actions speak louder than words.

No point owing $7k on a car when you have $36k in the bank. Pay it off. Debt isn’t your friend. Only on occasions where interest is extremely low does it make sense to hold.

I’d start saving for a home next. It will stabilize a very large expenditure of yours throughout the years, while building equity.

After you buy a home, I’d max out retirement funds, and consider investing in mutual funds with any extra money. Jmo.

You’re kind of asking two different questions here.

1. Future contributions vs. portfolio size: At $1.3M, your contributions already don’t move the needle very much. The swings in the market from year to year are much bigger than anything you can add. That’s what people mean when they say “contributions don’t matter anymore” — you’re mostly riding the growth of the portfolio.

2. Mortgage vs investing: The real trade-off is your 6% mortgage versus whatever return you expect in the market. Paying down the mortgage is a guaranteed 6% return, risk-free. Keeping it invested could earn more, but with volatility. There’s no single “right” answer — it comes down to your risk tolerance and how much flexibility you want.

Since you’re already well on your way toward covering your $100k/yr spending target, you’re past the point where the “magic number” of contributions matters. The more useful frame is: do I want to lock in a guaranteed 6% by paying off debt, or keep taking the market ride with a bigger portfolio?

It's common, but I've also seen it used against people. I know of a few people who were terminated because they were actively job searching (IE, commenting on recruiters' posts). They were looking for an excuse to terminate before that, and I'm sure "looking for jobs" wasn't the reason in the official paperwork, but it seemed pretty obvious.

No/low debt is a better starting point than most!! Open a Roth IRA and max it for this year. That’ll get $7k out of your savings. Do it again on January 1 for 2026. You can withdraw your contributions without penalty if you really need it in a future emergency. The gains are tax free in retirement too. HYSA isn’t bad either, but I’d start the Roth IRA first. Run some retirement calculators if you want to see realistic projections. The sooner you start, the better off you will be.

I think a lot of this is baloney. Yes, it is true that someone can build a successful startup in this environment, but that ignores the bigger reality.  Every company still needs customers, and there are only so many of them to go around. It is like telling everyone they can become famous if they just try hard enough. In reality, you can have the skills, the connections, the funding, and the timing, but you still need a large dose of luck.

How is $8600 minus $3900 not a lot of wiggle room? If you cant live off of $4700 of free money then you have a spending problem

You're spending FAR more than $2k/month if your rent is $1,600/month and you drive and have health risk.


You're doing OK, but try to figure out your actual expenses so you can come up with a proper savings rate.

Hey guys I’m 20F, and I have a joint bank account with my mom that she opened when I was a kid. The thing is, she’s very irresponsible with money.

She doesn’t want to work, and recently got fired at her last job and now sits unemployed at home all day with mysterious source of income to keep her living. She and I are no longer in contact because she hates me and I don’t want anything to do with her either. She sabotaged multiple parts of my life such as college application, relationships and stole precious things from me to put the final nail in the coffin to our mother-daughter bond. She put all her inherited jewelry to loan some money quick and I have not seen those jewellries since. 

The worry is, she has an account under my name that she used to take my monthly child wellfare money and now refuses to give away the password and such. I contacted the bank and it required both my mom and myself to sign the ownership to me. She would not move her ass to bank to sign. 

Question: What is something that she could possibly do with my account to put me in a difficult situation, given her tendency to steal and take out loans?

My 4 year Tesla investing journey to 0% Return

I currently work a dead end retail job making 44k a year at the age of 27. I feel like I have just watched my 20s wither away. I've never really received guidance on a career. Most people have told me that "you'll figure it out". Well here we are almost 9 years later and that clearly wasn't true. I currently have around 200k in savings if that makes any difference. I want to find a job that has a good life balance. I'd prefer to work 4 days a week. I wouldnt mind 4 10s but 4 8s would be ideal. I also would like a job where I don't have to work Friday evening to Saturday evening. Don't mind over night jobs but a 9 - 5 on the weekdays would be preferred. Here's a few things that interest me if this helps. Economics, real estate, and computer related stuff. 

Going to college really isn't an option for me because of my severe learning disabilities. I have autism, ADHD, speech impediment and dyslexia. States I've thought about moving to if this helps. Tennessee, North Carolina, and upstate NY, particularly around Onondaga county. 

What is a low stress job where I can make at least 60k a year with no degree?

I’ll be 35 in October and as the title states: I’ve been horrible with money my whole life.

To make this quick: I lost my job in June. I’m getting a new job in a couple weeks and also moving in with family around the same time. Rent will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, I’ll have a car I can borrow for work so no car payment. If I go through all my expenses for the month: minimum credit card payments, phone, rent, car insurance, pet insurance, etc, I should have $2k leftover every month to do with what I want. Maybe not a lot to you, but I’ve never had that much available every month, I’m use to living close to paycheck-to-paycheck and keeping a low amount in savings.

My question is: Should I begin slowly investing some of it? A lot of it? Should I focus on paying off my debts first in larger amounts (more than the minimum)?

My parents were bad with money, they didn’t know what they were doing and couldn’t really teach me anything either so I’ve just been robbing Peter to pay Paul my entire life so far and then being a dumb kid in his early 20’s also just thought if I ignored phone calls they’d give up and never collect their money haha.

Any guidance on how I should move forward would be appreciated! I read some of the info on this page and think I’m going to order some books too. I would really like to get my finances under control and become stable.

35 y.o. - Been Horrible With Money My Whole Life

First performance review, I was slow to figure out what the game was. Visibility, influence, etc. Things started to  ‘click’ after the performance review, just coincidentally. 

If I could start over again I feel like I would do well, unfortunately that’s not how things work. 

I’m generally wondering if I want to pursue the PIP and try to save my position, or just use my time to look for a new role.  I’m at 8months at c1 with about 5 yoe overall. 

My manager occasionally points out ways I can be more influential. I’m not sure if I sure take that as a sign that I have a decent chance. 

I also felt like I only received criticism right before performance reviews. That way he can say he warned me about being more influential.  Realistically that isn’t something you just do over a week. 


I’m feeling a little burnt out, it’s very tempting to opt out of the pip and take 2 months to relax and look for new jobs. People talk about how bad the economy is though. Not sure if that means I really should use the 2 months to secure new employment or save my old job. 

I like my coworkers and genuinely felt excited about the work, but only want to deal with stack ranking culture for a short burst. 

I think I would want to leave C1 in 6months -1year. My main concern is my resume only showing 10months. Also C1 salary was good compared to my previous positions. It feels really good to save aggressively.

Hello, when I was 13 my mother opened a joint debit card for me. shortly after she transferred in some money that was given to me(inheritance, graduation money, new years money...etc) which was given in cash. however due to her, maxing out my credit card while with her friends(yes she actually did steal my card), and overall, us having a strained relationship, i would prefer to withdraw my savings and transfer it into a new account with a separate bank. would this place me in any legal issues? I am now 19 for reference.

Last year I went on holiday to America and I had a skiing accident and ended up in hospital (torn ACL, the classic). I had insurance when I went over for winter sports, so my insurance company could cover the medical fees. HOWEVER, this dumb ass hospital I was treated at (they completely misdiagnosed me) will not stop harassing my family friends in america for my bill even though my insurance company said they have sent a stamp of payment to them numerous times. The hospital has been asking me to pay them directly (which is not how UK insurance companies work) to then get reimbursed by my insurance - which won’t work with the contract i signed. This was so long ago now that I emailed the hospital today and they have told me it will be going into bad debt?!?! WTF DOES THIS MEAN? Am I now never going to be let back to america because of this? Is there some big black X on me? It’s not my bill to pay😭😭😭😭😭. Americans please help!!!!!

I made a post recently about my family getting to an awesome milestone of $3M.

I got some heat on Reddit about it because it was a little too light-hearted in tone. My wife and I both came to and planned this decision for many years together. Her hard work has been instrumental to both our income and our families’s growth. Let me be clear about that…

Anyway, she actually just let me know she doesn’t want to FIRE anymore when I brought it up. She wants to continue working but just not at her job and follow her passions  in this second half of life. 

The plan is now to use our FIRE position to open a business instead since we are in a position to take risks so long we don’t generate huge losses. 

My wife and our friend’s husband are HUUUGEEEE wine people. Apparently they have been working on a business plan for a small wine shop. They really thought this through and showed me all the material and costs, plans to travel for procurement/wine selection, and how to use our position with FIRE to not worry about the risks as much. 

So, yeah not exactly FIRE MY WIFE but now at least she can try that for the next couple years or so. It isn’t exactly “retire early” or quitting work but if her business can become positive cash flow positive, it’s essentially “quasi-retiring”, there isn’t huge pressure to make a ton of money, and she can enjoy wine and travel all the time as a business expense. Huge W and I think a smart strategy for us!

Hello, throwaway account here. I hope I can get some guidance on my situation, and apologies if this isn’t the right place to ask.

For context, I recently graduated with an undergrad degree (USA) that blends computer science and business. Early in my second semester of senior year, I interviewed and received some offers, but I ended up taking a gamble on what seemed like a cool opportunity: working closely with the founder of a startup (10–20 people) with an interesting B2B product and significant traction.

The startup was doing well when I joined and before, but recently, due to factors beyond my control, many were laid off or outright fired. A few weeks later, the founder sat down with me and bluntly said things weren’t looking great. They and the investors agreed they needed to cut their burn rate, explaining the sudden staff reductions. Essentially, due to global conditions and some missteps, the founder acknowledged that major changes were necessary.

They told me directly they felt bad, especially since I’m a recent grad who turned down other offers and relocated far for this in-office role. Even if I stayed, they said it wouldn’t benefit my career, as my recent work has been really basic office tasks, (I was originally hired for strategy/analytics, working across departments to drive efficiency and growth).

While things were good initially, revenue has stalled and things won't be good for a while, he's even considering folding the company if things don't improve by January. They strongly advised me to start job searching, ideally finding something by the end of this month or next at the latest. Fortunately, he’s fine with me taking interviews during work hours. They also offered to refer me if opportunities arise but admitted it was unlikely.

**My question:** What should I do next? I’ve started reaching out to alumni and entry-level recruiters, but I’m worried I’m off-cycle for hiring and that entry-level roles are scarce. I have relevant work experience (part-time/contract roles in analytics/strategy/consulting during college, though mostly at startups/nonprofits, no big-name companies). I’m concerned about taking a "step backward" career-wise; I know having a job beats unemployment, but I want something optimal for growth if even remotely possible.

My goal is to pursue analytical/consulting work. I’m not a CS developer and have limited finance exposure.

To be clear: My relationship with the founder isn’t strained, he gave me a heads-up to be practical, and I've hit my targets and done a lot for the org. I appreciate his honesty, but it’s disappointing. Now, I feel like it’s falling apart. I feel lost and incredibly anxious.

I saw a post a month or two ago with someone who posted a number at which future contributions don’t make much of a difference….and that time is the biggest/most important factor thereafter. I assume age is a factor as well. What was that number/range?

I am 38F with about $1.3M in liquid investments. However, I have a mortgage ($500K) at a 6% interest rate. I know my expenses will change drastically as I age, so I don’t really have a specific FIRE number, although I expect I’ll need approx. $100K annually whenever I retire. My current plan is to invest until I hit the number where future contributions don’t really move the ball anymore, and then to move excess funds over to the mortgage. Number at which Future contributions make a minimal difference?

I can't help but notice that a few of my colleagues who are still working for the company and active on Slack have the "Open to Work" banner on linkedin. I mean I have no problem for them looking for a job change, but having that banner visible to everyone and their manager just doesn't seem right to me.

Is it normal? Is it a cultural thing specific to certain countries? I would like to hear what do you all think.

Sam Altman recently claimed that right now is the most exciting time in history to graduate and enter the workforce - even though AI is wiping out entry-level roles. He claims that AI gives young people power to innovate and create billion dollar companies.

That might sound inspiring or tone-deaf. 

If you are a white or blue collar Gen Z just starting out - do you see this an opportunity to leapfrog the old system or do you feel your wings have been clipped even before you get a chance to fly?

For white and blue collar millennials - do you resonate with Altman's blue-sky potential or does it feel disconnected from the pressure of staying relevant in fast-changing job market.

Personally as an older white collar millennial, I am somewhat mixed. I do not feel an immediate threat from AI but it would be naive of me stay blind to it.

EDIT: A lot of you have given good advice and insight, and a lot of you are straight up jerks. All I’ve done is respond to comments on my real current budget and situation, while agreeing that there’s areas to be improved, but I get downvoted and people acting like I’m an idiot. I hope all you sunshine’s have a great life.

Unfortunately despite my husband and I now many a decent combined income (we bring home about $8600 a month currently, after taxes, healthcare, and retirement contribution), we still are struggling. We’ve done a lot of dumb things with our finances, and made a lot of impulse purchases. We want to change, we have gotten pretty good at making budgets, but ultimately just have a lot of big monthly expenses to the point where we don’t have much leftover to save or put towards debt. It’s likely going to take us years and years to save and pay off debt. 

One of the biggest things is our house. My husband used to be military but recently got out in June. We bought a house (in retro it was a mistake) in 2022 with $0 down for $206,000. We tried to list it for sale in April after spending a couple grand to fix it up and make improvements and it just sat in the market with little interest. We couldn’t even sell it to break even, and we couldn’t afford to take a loss. 

We had to move in June because (expecting to sell our house) I already found a new job and my husband enrolled in school with his GI bill in a new location if of state. Eventually, we decided to list the house for rent so we wouldn’t be stuck with the mortgage payment AND our new rent payment. 

Our current situation is a 1 bedroom apartment (we have one toddler so not ideal but it’s doable for now) but I do have a good job here. My husband is getting some VA money as well. 

But with $1400 a month daycare, $1600 rent, $900 for both car payments, there’s not a ton of wiggle room. If we budget we have only $1200 leftover for savings or additional debt payoff. Our tenant is paying $1600 to rent our home, but after we pay mortgage, insurance and property management, we are barely break even on that, and will be a net negative if there are any repairs month to month.

One question I have is if we should try to sell the house again next year or wait a couple more years to try and get more equity prior to selling? 

Can’t sell home with no equity, already moved.

Last week, I acquired my second online business. It still feels surreal because I never thought I’d be in a position to buy businesses, rather than just build them from scratch.

This one is a Chrome extension called **SuperDevPro,** it bundles a bunch of tools for designers and developers (things like CSS inspection, font detection, color pickers, etc.).

A few takeaways from this deal (and my first acquisition):

* **Smaller acquisitions are overlooked.** Everyone talks about buying big companies, but small online businesses can be affordable and have real potential.
* **The founder’s motivation is everything.** Sometimes people sell not because it’s failing, but because they’ve lost interest or want to work on something else.
* **Buying vs. building is a different skill set.** It’s less about coding and more about evaluating whether you can grow what’s already there.
* **Post-acquisition is where the real work begins.** Buying is exciting, but figuring out how to scale and improve it is the challenge.

Still processing all of this, but I wanted to share here because I’ve learned a lot from this sub over the years.

As the title states, I just turned 30 with a \~$85k net worth - including all my investment and retirement accounts (401k/Roth IRA). Not sure if retirement accounts count towards net worth… I have $20k in HYSA, $1.3k in checking, $2.5k in individual brokerage, $37k in Roth IRA, $26k in 401k.

I’m currently making $85k-$90k annually. No debt. Single. Rent is $1600/mo. Average spending a month would be around $2000 including rent. Am I in a decent spot?

I’m 33 and recently got married. It was a very small elopement, so thankfully we didn’t go into any debt from the wedding. Right now, the only debt I have is a car loan with about $7,000 left on it—I just make the minimum payments each month. Also, should mention no kids but might in the future.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my financial situation: 
•	$6,000 in a savings account (just sitting there, barely any interest) 
•	$30,000 in another bank account (also just sitting there) 
•	Contributing $100/month to a 457 retirement account 
•	Renting currently, but we’d like to start saving toward a home 
•	No major expenses or emergencies at the moment

My issue is I’ve never really known how to make my money do anything. It just sits there. I’ve been reading about High Yield Savings Accounts (HYSAs), and I’m thinking about putting $5,000 into one as a start. But there are so many options—any recommendations?

Also open to any general advice about what I could be doing differently to grow my money. Are there benefits to being married now (tax-wise or otherwise) that we should be looking into?
