Contact your state Insurance Commissioner or insurance regulator and make a complaint.  Most state insurance regulators have a staff of advocates who will look into issues like this.  They should be able to get your policy reinstated retroactively, based on the email you received.

PennyMac should be able to send you a copy of the request that they sent to MSI to change the servicer name. Get a copy of this & keep it for your records. 

That said, I def wouldn’t go back to MSI for insurance since they messed up so badly! Pennymac has you covered with force placed insurance currently, so seek other insurance elsewhere IMMEDIATELY and don’t give them this whole confusing scenario up front. 
Answer any questions honestly & if it comes up, just say there was a mixup caused by MSI during the loans service transfer to Pennymac. To prevent a lapse in coverage Pennymac has you covered under force placed, but it’s way too expensive & you need a new plan. This kind of stuff happens all the time. 

Once you get the new plan & make Pennymac the beneficiary, call Pennymac & give them the info. Your escrow account will then be reanalyzed and you’ll likely have a new lower payment. Lower than it would be with the force placed insurance. 

I've had two jobs where I've worked either 112 (16 on, 8 off, 7 days a week for 30+ days) or (nowadays) 60-70, my advice is protect your sleep, plan relaxing but memorable stuff for your off days, and have your personal habits systematized so you don't have to think much about them and can enjoy your time instead. Like it takes me less than 20 minutes of actual work to wash every piece of clothing I own. I eat the same meals every work day, and do meal prep. Whatever it takes. Also helps if you actually enjoy the work.

Hire a lawyer. Negotiating with different parties that all refuse to talk to each other is literally their job description. It might be surprising, but the number of times that a typical lawyer ends up standing in court is much more rare than what Hollywood would have you believe. A lot of what they do is just reaching out to the other party and telling them to get their act together or else...

Obesity is far more related to diet than it is exercise, so I'd add discipline around food as a critical piece of this. Things like RHR, Fasting Blood Glucose, HRV and V02 max should be in there, too.

This is pretty much what I sum it up as. It's pretty capable but still needs guidance and corrections on your part, but given the right context it really can speed things up quite a bit. I've likened it to "auto complete on steroids", in that it can gain context from what I name things and am working with to pretty intelligently suggest what it thinks I wanna do next.

It's absolutely not flawless and can definitely be outright wrong, but that's also why you're there. It's absolutely not to the point of architecting a full business solution (yet), but in general I've found it really does speed things up for me as far as the more boilerplate stuff is concerned.

Did you leave your old job on good terms? Is it possible to boomerang back? 

As for if the new employer has any liability you will need to seek a consultation with an employment attorney. 

But the bottom line is if you force your new employer to honor terms they don’t want to honor, that doesn’t bode well for your future. 

Likewise, learning what you have about the way they are handling your compensation, you might not see a future there. 

So it’s worth an exploratory call to your old job to see if there is any opportunity for you rejoin the fold. 

Better the Devil you know, with more PTO, for the same pay.

Get a second job and work another 20 hours a week for a few years until that seems normal. 

Then go back to just your current schedule and you'll feel like you're on vacation every day.

I really fancy the idea of becomming a teacher, way more meaningfull impact on society then this shit industry.

I'd say it's much worse than "overconfident". I'm not sure the word for it. It's like an intern that's overly confident, speaks in a way that's trustworthy and sounds competent, *and* he just took a bunch of acid and is hallucinating half the time, and isn't testing their own work and just submitting shit on blind faith that it works.

We actually had a couple training sessions recently at my company from a guy at Microsoft regarding Copilot. One thing he continuously emphasized is that it's a *copilot*. We are still the pilots. He himself said that the most dangerous thing about Copilot, and the biggest disasters he's seen, are people that trust it. Copilot is a tool that can help us quickly get through mundane tasks. It is not a resource that can be used to blindly generate code we ship to production. *The creators* are telling us that it should not be used for blind code generation. That's telling.

A funny thing about those trainings that I noticed is that the instructor himself struggled a lot during all his demos because the AI wouldn't co-operate, and he had to live debug why things weren't working the way he wanted. It's very telling when a *live demo to a major customer* goes haywire.

I use AI the exact same way I use StackOverflow. It's a tool to get me information, or get quick answers to mundane tasks. It's *not* something I just copy/paste. It *augments* my abilities, it doesn't generate my code. It's just a faster Google, and Google/StackOverflow results also need to be taken with a big ass grain of salt.

Even if the job post were real, take a moment to think about the type of company whose interview process consists of a 30 minute video interview. Is that the kind of company you want to work for? The interview process is a direct reflection of a company. Red flags you see with that process will turn into even bigger red flags if you start working for them.

So be thankful they ghosted you, and didn't hire you and lock you into several years of misery.

Industries are dying...what are new grads even supposed to do ?

I started my company in 2023 after building a ton of solutions looking for problems.  I'm a software engineer who's always fucking loved writing code.  I can't stop.  I'm always building and if I'm not I'm depressed. I built a SaaS tool at the behest of my wife, a PHD chemist, to solve a real problem she was having.  

The thing is, just as I was starting to see success and the potential to pay myself from this side project we got pregnant.  I wasn't going to risk the future of my child on an (semi)unproven software idea. So I kept my day job and worked 60 hours a week (40 at the day job, 20 at the start up) to scale the business.  So many things hit at once though and it was an exceptionally stressful time towards the end.  

Fast forward another year and I have an 8 month old and 6 people working on this side-project-that's-gotten-out-of-hand. I was still working a day job and incredibly burnt out.  Again, not willing to risk my future on the business at this stage in my life, I started looking for a buyer.  I found 3, one via outreach on LinkedIn another via a networking event that happened a year prior, and another was a contact I knew.  I ultimately took the riskiest deal, so less cash up front but more upside potential and much more interesting work.

At the end of the day, I owned 85.5% of the company I sold and now have this sale as a feather in my cap.   I'm currently back to being a standard W-2 employee only, albeit a founding engineer at the company that acquired mine.  It's such a mixture of happiness, anxiety and, oddly enough, numbness to the sale.  I feel like I'm still working on awesome stuff, but fundamentally my life hasn't changed.  We'll have the house paid off, and the kids college fund paid for, but I'm still just a working stiff.

I recently obtained a new job. At my previous position I was paid $70,000 a year and had excellent benefits including an absurd amount of PTO 25 vacation days 12 sick days 3 personal days and 12 paid holidays. I applied for a very similar position and was offered and accepted the job. The base pay was the same $70,000 but instead of 70 cents a mile for travel reimbursement I would be given a $1,200 a month stipend. I am a remote employee but work on the road often (I’m basically a social worker) this new position offers 15 vacation days 5 sick days and 11 paid holidays. I was okay with the deduction in time off due to the higher reimbursement rate effectively raising my salary. I hit three weeks at the new job today and HR sent out a company wide email stating as of June 1st they will no longer provide the travel stipend and will be switching to 70 cents a mile. In my interview I was promised the $1,200 a month as part of my compensation as they knew the benefits I was losing and wanted me to come on board. I have a signed employment contract and offer letter stating the $1,200 a month reimbursement without any indications it could or would be subject to change. I have called two different people in HR, sent them emails, and reached out to my supervisor with no response. Is there anything legally I can do here? I feel very screwed over and am obviously furious. I’m essentially being paid $14,400 a year less than expected after leaving my old job of 5.5 years. Any advice is appreciated. 

Employer changing pay structure three weeks into employment effectively lowering salary.

I am curious why are the AI companies focusing most of their products on replacing SWE jobs?   
  
In my mind its because this one of the few sectors they have found revenue. For example, I would bet most of OpenAI subscriptions come from Software Engineers. Obviously the most successful application layer AI startups (Cursor, Windsfurf) are towards software engineers.   
  
Don't they realize that by replacing them and laying them off they wont pay for AI products and therefore no more revenue?   
  
Obviously, someone will say most of their revenue comes from B2B. But the second B, meaning businesses which buy AI subscriptions en masse, are tech businesses which want to replace their software engineers.  
  
However, a large percentage of those sell software to software engineers or other tech companies or tech inclined people. Isn't this just a ticking bomb waiting to go off and the entire thing to implode?

Data doesn't lie. Why is whenever I hear justification for H1B and STEM-OPT  everywhere on mainstream media, and even codified in US law, court transcripts and policy discussions: they keep saying there's a shortage of STEM workers, especially  tech workers and we need more immigrants to fill those roles. Why do we hear this all the time, but it's never actually supported by data?

Further, the department of labor actually has a list of jobs known to be in shortage and it doesn't use biased industry reports to determine them: it uses its own data as well as BLS data. This list is called "Schedule A" and it allows employers to fast track immigrant visas into these occupations without needing to go through the H1B process.

But the INA has this weird thing where if a prospective job pays under $60k the employer must recruit US workers first, but it does not offer that protection to jobs that pay over $60k or if the job requires a masters degree. Congress justified this, as saying jobs paying over $60k or requiring a masters is a reasonable proxy to a job that is in shortage. 
But it's not. Schedule A has existed for just as long as the H1B came about in 1990. This makes me question the purpose of the H1B in the first place.

If the DOL has the ability to analyze the labor market and determine certain jobs are in dire need, and need skilled immigrant labor, and our those on a dynamic list every year, why do we have "H1B" at all? Why can't the actual jobs in shortage, be listed, and the jobs not in shortage have to prove they couldn't find a qualified US citizen before hiring an immigrant?

It seems congress relied on industry lobbying and their "facts" rather than our own DOL and BLS.

The myth of the STEM talent shortage

I know that seems insane, but an opportunity feel into my lap and after only two interviews, I have a job offer for a $50k salary increase and I cannot stop crying at the thought of leaving my current job and team. 

I had a big birthday recently and in reflecting on the prior decade, I realized how far behind I am financially. I have a LOT of debt, and have never experienced true financial comfort, so when I saw the price tag on this job description, I threw my hat in the ring and I guess I never thought it would go far let alone THAT fast. 

I got the offer letter in writing yesterday and I had to tell my boss and SVP (our team is just the 3 of us) and they were stunned and I was crying so card. My boss cried too. I KNOW I have to put myself first, but I am completely caught off guard by how devastated I feel to have to leave. 

This job is a HUGE life change, as I’m currently fully remote and new role requires 4 days in office and is an hour commute each way, but it brings an opportunity to get myself out of the red that I wouldn’t be able to get if I stay. 

Has anyone else experienced this? and do you have any advice? I guess because it feels like I have to take this offer instead of I want to take this offer, and I’m really caught off guard by my emotions. 

how do I stop crying over a $50k salary increase?

Hired as remote 100% employee, live far away from office, strong performer, company doing well. Now RTO is implemented across the board without notice. No severance if you don’t move back. No relocation support. So looks like I’ll be forced to quit? This will be interesting…

We have around $1.5M across accounts, which includes 3 years of cash. Paid off house and cars. Spend $50-60k annually. This is why we’ve been building that FU money.

I'm an Senior Software Engineer with 7 years of experience. I have been contemplating quiting my job to take a career break. My only fear is I wont be able to find another one if I do. I'm hoping seniors can share their experience. BTW, I'm located in Canada.

Is the market bad for experienced engineers or only Junior/Intermediate?

I’m 38 years old. Married with a wife. Combined wife and I have around $1 million $10k in brokerage, equity and retirement and about 12k in bank account. 

I’ve been maxing our 401ks and Roths for some time. 

At what point can I reasonably slow down?

I earn 180k a year and she earns 55k. No kids, no debt except house. Do have some major house repairs coming. Drive older 2008 Toyota that’s getting up there in miles and a 2016 Subaru that’s only got about 40k miles due to COVID. 

401k balance is about 60% s&p 500 10% small cap/ mid cap/ and international, and 20% bonds. 

I just had a big salary bump and have been used to living in around $110k + wife’s 55k while maxing everything including Roth IRA for both of us somewhat comfortably so we live like we are poor. 

Monthly expenditures maybe $4500-$5,000 in VHCOL area including mortgage.(PNW) 

$700k in brokerage and 401k, $310k in home equity, what now?

Anyone else feel like using AI for coding is like working with a really fast, overconfident intern? it’ll happily generate functions, comment them, and make it all look clean but half the time it subtly breaks something or invents a method that doesn’t exist.

Don’t get me wrong, it speeds things up a lot. especially for boilerplate, regex, API glue code. but i’ve learned not to trust anything until i run it myself. like, it’s great at sounding right. feels like pair programming where you're the senior dev constantly sanity-checking the junior’s output.

Curious how others are balancing speed vs trust. do you just accept the rewrite and fix bugs after? or are you verifying line-by-line?



Coding with AI feels like pair programming with a very confident intern

There are several players in this.  Old mortgage company (KB Homes).  New mortgage company (PennyMac).  Insurance company (MSI under the QBE umbrella).

So we moved into a newly built home in May 2023 and got our mortgage through KB Home and home insurance through MSI.  A month after living here our mortgage was sold to PennyMac.  I did not know that I was supposed to contact my insurance company to tell them of the change.  I found out about this in May 2024 when I noticed that my mortgage jumped a large amount in price.  I called both companies and got everything fixed.  At least I thought I did.  

Fast forward to today and I receive a notice of cancellation from my insurance for nonpayment.  I'm very confused.  According to PennyMac, I have an active policy that is set to renew 5/23.  I contacted QBE only to find out that they still have my old mortgage company on the paperwork and that my policy was actually cancelled a year ago due to nonpayment.  PennyMac never received the notice of cancellation because it was sent to the old mortgage company.  PennyMac is claiming that they sent a notice to MSI in June 2024 to get the updated paperwork.  MSI never responded and PennyMac never followed up or contacted me to do my own follow up.  So MSI never received my 2024 payment and cancelled my policy.  They are claiming that they emailed me a few times about this.  I never delete my emails.  Their records state that they sent me an email on 6/9/2024 telling me that my policy was cancelled due to nonpayment.  I searched my inbox and the only thing I have regarding this is an email from 6/9/2024 from them telling my that my policy was renewed until May 2025, but the policy still had my old mortgage company on it.  The title of the email is literally, "Your insurance policy has renewed".  The email states:

You’re covered. Take a moment to look at your policy details and reach out to your agent with any questions.

Policy Number: PWBXXXXXXXXX

Effective: 5/23/2024 to 5/23/2025

Location: MY ADDRESS

MSI is claiming that they never received anything from PennyMac requesting a change to the paperwork.  MSI is saying that their records are showing that they only emailed me about this issue.  Emails which I never received.  They didn't try using regular mail or calling me.

So now here's the problems I am currently dealing with.

MSI won't reinsure me because they don't insure people who have lapses in their policies for longer than 30 days.  

PennyMac is saying that since I wasn't actually covered I would have fallen into their backup insurance plan and now they will charge my escrow account for a year's worth of that plan.  They can't tell me at this moment what the charge will be, only that it will probably be much more than what I was supposed to be paying.  

I've started looking at other home insurance companies, but I am worried about facing hurdles or higher premiums due to a not having coverage for this past year.  

What do I do here?

I just found out that I haven't had homeowner insurance for the past year and I don't know what to do.

I just quit my job today. 

I have nothing lined up. I have a few second round interviews next week. No guarantees. 

My mental health in my job was horrible. The final nail(s) in the coffin: worked until 4am last night Thursday to get a client deck together that my boss completely overhauled 8 hours later. Called out in front of a client and my entire leadership team for taking too long on a project. I’m brand new. My manager could have stepped in. Felt horrible. 

I’m going after new roles that better align with my personality and life status. 

I have a financial cushion. I’ve got this. 

What do you think?

What was the hardest thing you’ve given up in your FIRE goal?

I recently starting working at one of the most prestigious companies in the US. I’m very fortunate to work here and I have a great role for someone my age.

My schedule basically has me wake up at 5:30, get ready, work from 6-6:30, commute to the office, and then work 7-5:30. 

I then go to the gym many days after work which leaves me with almost no free time.

I really only need to do this for a year or two. My team is great for promotions and I can eventually transfer to a team with better work life balance. 

I’m wondering if people have some recommendations for how I can have a fulfilling life while doing this. I know it’ll pay off in the long run and in the grand scheme of things my hours aren’t that bad.

Any tips? The work is sales and can be fairly intense.

How do I manage working 50 hours a week without burning out?

36 year old male. Got an opportunity to start a new job about 2 hours away in my hometown. Currently dealing with emotional and some physical health issues. In a single dude, no debt, no kids. Have a few years worth of savings. Currently make about 100k/year in the US and new job is 75k/year however parents have opened their home for me to live with them for at least a year for added support (emotional, mentally). Thoughts on this financially and logically?

I’m a software developer who’s been doing this for a while, but lately something just isn’t clicking. I’m not sure if it’s burnout or just the state of the industry, but I’ve been feeling off about this path and honestly, the current job market doesn’t help. Constant layoffs, instability, more pressure for less reward… it’s exhausting.

I’ve been thinking more and more about making a change. Not something totally out there like medicine or law or anything that requires starting over from scratch but something new, something that might still use my coding or technical skills without being pure software development.

The problem is, I don’t even know where to start looking. What kinds of jobs would let me stay in tech (or close to it) without being in the trenches of code all day? What kind of roles value dev experience but let you do something different—more people-facing, strategic, or creative?

Has anyone here actually made a career shift out of software dev? If so, what did you move into, and how did it go? And if you haven’t jumped yet but dream about it—what direction would you go?
