Supply has already outpaced the demand. Now it's just a matter of how much the wages will go down, and how much will the market oversaturate for making that possible.

Make sure you let your co-workers know how the company treated you.  That way they can decide if they want to provide any notice if/when they move on.  It wouldn't be unreasonable for employees to leave with zero notice.

You're mixing up terms (probably) unintentionally. 

Every defined benefit pension has some sort of calculation behind it. Any single pension plan can be customized to the trustees' hearts' content.

A common one is annual pension = [(# of years) x (a multiplier) x (your salary)]. This is what you get when you retire, not as soon as you get vested. 

Vesting just means "do you get anything at all, yes or no?" And sounds like you qualify after 5 years.

Next question: whats the definition of a year? Is it 52 weeks of work, aka it doesnt count if you miss a week? Probably not, and it might be somewhere closer to 40ish weeks

Alright so now youre vested at 5 years. How much does your pension increase/accrue every year? Are there credit thresholds that matter (like 10/20 yrs)? Whats the normal retire age? Whats early retirement age? How much is the reduction in your pension from normal to any given early retirement date?

Ok now lets rewind a bit: youre clearly still of working age. How much, if anything, is deducted from your paycheck to contribute to the pension fund? Sounds like its all paid for by the employer, and they pay to a third-party pension fund?

If you cant answer all these questions confidently, then you can't expect random redditors to do so. Try contacting the pension fund (not the union local hall) for a copy of the summary plan description (which is a more reader-friendly version of the Fund's plan document which has all the verbose legalese behind how the Fund determines and administers benefits).

Medical and legal fields have used regulations to limit the number of new professionals and introduce artificial scarcity to keep their prestige and compensation high. Software engineering does not have any such regulations and hence are prone to cyclical trends of over hiring and layoffs.

Juniors are screwed, but seniors are OK, I've seen many people with a lot of years of experience that can't solve basic problems, so good seniors are hard to find, the only problem with this is that interviews are getting harder to filter those

The problem with any “business admin” or “admin” certs/degrees in general is that it’s too broad. I’d say depending on your job market look at what you can specialize in. Look into your current companies job postings and see if there’s anything you’re actually interested in and get a cert/degree more focused on that if you can.

Maybe not enough to never earn another dollar but certainly enough to where you can take several months off , get well and get a job that suits you

congrats on your success.  also don’t lose sight of the fact that you’re “rich”.  not mega powerball winner rich, but state powerball winner rich.  fire folks (not even chubby) are the top 5% of the top 5%.  

if you won a $10m lottery today and took the lump sum, your net after tax would be ~$3.8m.  but thankfully, fire has taught us. Setting up books and maintaining them properly so I can make informed business decisions. Also stepping back and learning to do the most important functions of the business myself (I make physical products, so learning CAD and graphic design). It can be tempting to hire freelancers to do things you don't know how to do, and maybe you'll get lucky, but in my experience that was shortcut that didn't work out.

It is simple. You were at a bad company, who put bad management in their position.

If you’re working as an admin it’s a pretty flat career path overall, even in giant corporations there are often only 2 or 3 levels of admins making promotions rare. 

The thing is you often get to work with other functions, you get exposure to parts of finance/budgeting, operations, marketing, HR etc.  

A lot of admins spiderweb in lateral positions (sometimes at a pay cut) to eventually get in to a field with more upward mobility.

Need more context on what else is in that section. In a vacuum, at some milestone or after some point let’s say your base pay was $100K. The pension would pay out $33,500 on some basis (also likely stayed in your contract) if you have the service time or contributions to hit that.

Generally, like using a friends as an example who is a teacher. He will receive 80% of the average of the last 5 years of his salary every year until he dies. Meaning if his average was $100K over the 5 years, when he retires he will receive $80K a year in perpetuity until death.

Stop treating admin like it’s your career. It’s a jumping off point. It’s a way to network with other teams, build relationships, get on projects and strut your stuff. If you’re not already a wizard at Excel, become one. Knowing Excel well goes a long way in business. Admin is a fine career for people who want to be an admin forever, but you clearly don’t. I bounced off into supply chain and absolutely could not be more thrilled with what I do, especially compared to what I used to do.

I don't need the details, but how are you spending your money as opposed to her? Reading between the lines, it seems she wants to spend more in the present, whereas you're investing in your future. Would it be possible for you to be a little less frugal and reward yourself now as well?

Of course, if the gap between both your expectations is too wide, this may not change a thing...

Man, this is so common. The reality is, entrepreneurship is not sexy in the early grind phase—late nights, financial stress, and delayed gratification don’t exactly scream romance.

But here’s the thing: if she needs financial stability to feel secure in the relationship, no amount of explaining passion will change that. Some people just aren’t wired for the rollercoaster.

You have two options:

1. Compromise – Set small financial wins that let you both enjoy life while you build. A ‘date night fund,’ mini getaways, whatever.
2. Accept the misalignment – If stability is what she values most, and you're all-in on the long game, you might just want different things in life.

I've got ADHD, so getting into business is a struggle, let alone as an element of my relationship with my 10-yr fiance'.


For me, It really comes down to three things:

1. Having a plan with goals.
2. Communicating that plan and goals to her, effectively. Hopefully getting her buy-in because of how well you communicate.
3. Doing the plan, no excuses, come hell or high water.

We made a rule that says if I'm unable to meet my obligations for the mortgage, bills, and putting aside a set amount of cash every month beyond business operating expenses for three months, that I'd hang it up and get something consistent. So far it hasn't been an issue but I also find myself being actively pushed to not let my ADHD get the better of me. I go to therapy and have a mentor that keep me accountable, in addition to the fiance', and that helps a ton.

Besides the business stuff, if she's saying things like "not feeling the spark", it likely goes deeper than just your income. It might be time to talk to a professional that can help you unpack all of that and help you determine if you're both headed down the right path together. Don't rely on the comments of random strangers on the internet for this kind of thing, or you'll always be second-guessing yourself.

I want to preface everything that I only have a year of professional experience.

Since Cursor is the new hotness right now with agents, my CTO is making it so that everyone in the department has to it and strictly use agents. He states that coding by hand is too slow and that we are living in the past if we do so. There is a pressing need and want to go faster and faster.

I am wondering if anyone else is running into this as well? I anticipated (as everyone does) that AI was going to shake up the industry more and more as time went on, but not this soon and abrupt.

I am wondering if I am just not being open minded enough and this is the norm, or if my CTO is just on a bender.

Just hit a massive gambling win on Stake. Enough to retire comfortably. I’m a Senior Security Engineer with about 8 years of experience, working in cloud security and threat detection for a mid-size tech company. I don’t hate my job, but I also don’t need it anymore.

I want to handle my exit professionally, but I’m also aware that in cybersecurity, sudden departures can be a red flag. Company policy is two weeks' notice, but I’ve seen people in my field get walked out the same day, especially when they have privileged access. I don’t care about references, and I don’t plan on working again, but I also don’t want to leave on bad terms just for the sake of it.

Would you just put in the standard notice and see what happens, or is there a better way to approach this? Wondering if anyone in security has gone through something similar and how it played out.

What careers will land 80-100k with 2 years of education?

New to reddit and this sub so hopefully this is the right place for this post.

I'm single, in my early 20's, currently making less than 30k a year, and live in a tiny studio apartment with my dog. Its fine but long story short, I have to move in the near future to better accommodate my dog's needs. I have a somewhat lucrative job opportunity working for a buddy of mine and, to once again make a long story short, I'd likely be able to put 40-60k in savings over the course of a year or two. I'm considering working my ass off doing this job until I could afford to buy a crappy house or a lot of land that I could put a trailer on. I can work the job from anywhere in the country and I'm willing to move anywhere north of Kansas (without getting too into the details, job does not require me to work at home or have a good internet connection, it's a trucking job that only requires enough space to store a large vehicle). 

I've been looking online a bit for cheap spots and I've found lots of places that seem pretty reasonable. Large plots of land for under $10,000 and smaller plots with livable houses for $30,000 - $40,000. I'm not much for the more cramped lifestyle of the city and I'd like to own my own property, is there a catch to these places? It seems too good to be true but maybe there just isn't much demand for kinda shitty places way out in the sticks. Given that this lifestyle aligns pretty strongly with my values and preferences is it a smart decision to try and buy one of these properties in cash, given that it wouldn't affect my employment? 

P.S. I have pretty shitty credit so its hard for me to get approved for apartments and I assume it would be pretty hard for me to get a mortgage anytime soon on a "normal" house. 

tl;dr: Should I stack up for a year and buy a $30,000 house in bumfuck Pennsylvania so that I'm not beholden to a landlord for the rest life?

Lately, I’ve realized my obsession with saving and investing might be starting to affect my quality of life.

I’m 31, single (with a girlfriend), and living in a relatively high-cost-of-living city. From 2017 to around 2022, I wasn’t making much money. By the end of 2022, I was earning about $80K a year, but I had over $15K in credit card debt and only $27K in my 401(k).

In early 2023, I secured a better job at $110K a year and aggressively focused on paying off my debt while increasing my 401(k) contributions. By the end of the year, I had paid off half my credit card debt and grown my 401(k) to $50K.

Then, in fall 2024, everything changed. I started a consulting business on the side, and the income scaled so quickly that I was able to leave my full-time job. I’m now making about $300K a year (pre-tax).

Feeling like I was behind on retirement savings, I went all-in. I started 2024 with $50K in total savings and a pile of debt—now, as of today, I have:

* **$117K saved** ($81K in my 401(k), $7K in a Roth IRA, $30K in a brokerage)
* **$30K emergency fund** (and no more credit card debt—ever again!)

Even though I’m in a much better position, I still feel "behind." I’ve set a goal to save at least $10K per month, but my extreme focus on saving is starting to take a toll.

I’ve been skipping trips and adventures to save more. I’m even unsure about going to France with my girlfriend’s family this summer because I’m worried about the cost.

Someone please tell me I sound ridiculous and that I need to relax, save responsibly, and still enjoy my life.

Big tech interview q's are valuable information so i'll do my share and do a knowledge dump here. Unlike last time, I'm currently employed so I didn't care too much about the result, it was just for fun and a test of my skills to gauge the market and where i'm at.

I saw a post here saying "apply to amzn it's super easy cuz of RTO people quitting!" i was like lul ok i'll bite. Sent a few apps for Front End Engineer and got a recruiter call the next day.

Process is incredibly efficient: OA -> Directly to final round (5 people) -> Rejection 2 days later

Prep - i did minimal prep since i was working. HUGE upgrade on behavioral stories, i gained some good exp the last year in current job, slight review of leetcode and sys design.

**The interview:**

**OA-** create a app that has a form with name, phone, address with submit btn. when press submit it adds the entry to a table. fields must BE VALIDATED with proper format and will display error msg if invalid.

Overall an "easy" but time consuming task. i used AI to speed this up greatly to finish this in time. had it not been for AI this would be a complaint/time waster OA that people complain about. Immediate pass, recruiter told me i'm going to final round.

**Final round -** 2 behavioral/ FE code, 1 full behavioral, 1 behavioral/DSA code, 1 behavioral/Sys design.

**Technical code questions:**

\-HTML/CSS/JS - given skeleton html div, css, answer the width and color of the box. Center it (gg center a div? aint no way). Then, create a dynamic table of names/dobs inside the box.

\--straightforward, i clarified that theres a json data coming in and he allowed me to use react so i got this done easily.

\-You know in your IDE there directory structure, with folders and files? Given a pic/mock of that. Build it.

\--was trickier i had to clarify things but i assumed i was given a json object of folders and file names and i iterated over the data and outputted the result checking whether it's a file or folder, if it's a folder, recursion it. I got the result though code quality was scuffed due to low time.

\-DSA- big O questions for search and sort. Given an HTML page, write a function that scans the entire html and returns all elements of a given style. like check('color',blue') returns an array of elements that would include <div color='blue'>

\--first time seeing this Q. was thrown off but i tried a recursion strat similar to above. i ran out of time to get nice code so it was rough. i got the logic and overall concept but interviewer prob expected better code.

\-System Design - Game app. Two workflows. 1st- word plus 4 pictures, pick the correct picture that matches the word. 2nd- picture with text box, type correct word in text box. after submit will show correct or incorrect screen.

\--I followed the standard outline for sys design like Functional reqs, non-func, API... etc. Odd experience, as i was starting the Functional reqs, i was interrupted and asked about architecture. As i was going thru API, i was interrupted and told me 'ur repeating the same thing in functional reqs' and i said i was going thru a detailed implementation. We talked about CDN (s3 vs locally hosted) and i missed marks on those questions (Pros and cons). Sucks, i did what i could i felt i did ok but i could tell it wasn't good enough, at least i learned something. 
\--(lol) i started mentioning db and he was like "no. forget db. this is frontend. i dont care"

**Behaviorals,** questions included:

\-tell me bout a time when you disagree with rest of team and how you resolve

\-Customer wanted something, but, what he wanted wouldn't have solved his issue

\-Took a big risk

\-Fresh perspective on a topic that was opposite of teams and you were right

\-Challenging problem that took a long ass time to solve

Not going in full detail, but my stories were vastly improved from 2 years ago, interviewers seemed pleased with them. My best stories were:

\- troubleshooting sister npm package subdependencies and having to go to github and collab with the authors.

\-Pushing for elimination of a 996-1198px breakpoint because it's a limbo breakpoint nobody uses. desktops are all 1280px+

Overall i felt i did pretty well, much better than last time, but, i was not confident i passed since i had some hiccups. And the result was i didn't. The rejection message was an automated email, no recruiter call. it's so efficient and minimal human interaction.

Welp it is what it is, i'll try again next time but i'm feeling fine! Any discussions feel free to comment and hope this helps.

PS- I asked the interviewers their opinion on 5 day RTO and ALL 5 OF THEM SAID I love it I sometimes went 5 days in office anyway! (... lol)

I thought I would be out in my late 30s but was wrong. I'm 41.

I'm nearly out.

I can't wait. I am so busy at work and got told "you're such a team player bro". 

I am thinking I am so close to exiting and feeling both relieved and disconnected.

For the first time in my life, I could actually exit if I want to.

I am going to spend my 40s with my kids.

Today my wife said "you work so much but you don't spend quality time" and even though it's only been like that for a 2 months, she was right.

We give everything to this insane bullshit system: taxes, making others rich, and then keeping up with the joneses.

I don't even have the desire to argue with people. let em be.

Literally I am counting down every sale I need to finally be able to call it a day without huge worries.

I'm all for nice things but I see people living in apartments driving luxury cars with zero retirement living paycheck to paycheck. 

How the fuck can someone 35+ rationalize spending 5k to rent a fancy new apartment rather than just getting a normal apartment and investing the difference?



I can finally see the light

I have studied two certificates in business admin and as I'm a late bloomer to the job market due to having kids earlier on in life, I started working at age 26, 10 years have flown past and I really haven't made any movement in my career, I thought by now I'd be in a better position but I can't seem to move on, maybe I'm stuck in a comfort zone. 

I have a career coach that is helping me but I still feel stuck on how I can move on, I don't think I have any transferrable skills to pass on from an admin position. 

I see so many others much younger than me in higher positions, maybe they were given an opportunity or worked hard to get there but I feel like I work hard also and go beyond to help but staying stagnant here won't help me later in life, is anyone else feeling the same way that is around my age?

What’s the best decision you made early on in your business that paid off in the long run?

I moved to the U.S. about 8–9 months ago (permanent green card). I have a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and spent nearly five years as a Product Manager at one of the largest companies in LATAM, working on regional products. From the start, I knew finding a job in the U.S. would be challenging.

I eventually landed a Marketing Coordinator role at a coral retail company in Orlando, FL, paying $23/hour. It wasn’t ideal—no benefits or growth opportunities—but it was enough to get settled. The workload was manageable, and the hours were flexible, so I was content for the time being.

Two weeks ago, I found a much better opportunity—bigger company, significantly higher pay—so I submitted my two-week notice. The owners were appreciative and thanked me for my time.

Then, yesterday, right after lunch, I was called into the office and told I was being terminated immediately. Their reasoning? They’re a small company that “needs to move quickly” and thought it would be best for everyone if I just left. I was stunned. Sure, I understand "at-will employment," but ethically, it felt wrong—not even letting me finish the week.

What stings the most is that any goodwill I had toward the company instantly disappeared because of this petty move. It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I put in my 2-week notice and the owners fire anyways.. Why are they like that and then they complain about not finding good candidates?

I recently joined a startup as a junior software engineer, and I just participated in my first release retrospective. I had contributed a feature in this release so mentioned what went well with that. However, I noticed that only senior management were speaking, and even my head of engineering remained silent.

My comment seemed well received, but now I’m wondering—was it okay for me to contribute as a junior? Or is it generally expected that newer engineers just listen and observe in these retros? I don’t want to overstep, but I also want to be engaged and contribute where I can.

Given how agressively 9 out of 10 people are pursuing the field of software development in general (the degree holders, the bootcamp grinders, the self- taught-school-dropout maestros and the delusional non STEM folks), there is a HUGE surge of supply in the market. Compared to other professions like doctors, lawyers, business grads, electronics, mechanical etc. where the supply demand ratio is relatively stable, the current scenario of this job market ain't looking very promising. 

Software in general is a growing field but if everyone and their grandmothers start to pursue this field like the ongoing trend, the demand will eventually peak out and job openings will come to a halt. For a fresh grad who doesn't understand global freakonomics (freaky economics), have limited understanding of the software market and is sceptical about the supply being far more the demand in the unforeseeable future, kindly share your insights.

Retire early a 40 with 450K

My girlfriend and I have been together almost 4 years. We started dated basically when I went off on my own (was not planning on dating. Kind of just happened and I embraced it) Me building my company has taken a massive toll on our relationship. She has a 9-5 and is successful. I’ve been successful in my career as well and currently have great momentum but income isn’t fully consistent yet. I’ve been clear about spending money and where it goes during this time and she wants us to just be able to “live life”. While I want that too, I’m perfectly happy with my decision because my line of work is something I’m truly passionate about. Overall, This has led to disconnect in general. We’ve had open discussions about how can we fix it but nothing has changed. One of the things that comes up is she doesn’t really feel the “spark” because of the unsteady income and not being able to do the things she wants. she keeps sayings it’s not sexy and that wears on her. Comments like that while I can understand logically, don’t make me feel supported or that she even has the same perspective around what I’m doing. How do I navigate this? I’m feeling like your partner is such an important role as an entrepreneur and I wonder if it’s a good fit for her to be with someone like me 🤷‍♂️
