As a hard living adolescent I didn’t think I would make it to 25 and here I sit 52 years old.

From my understanding, you pay this upfront. If rates come down in a few years and you refinance, this is money down the drain (minus what was saved during that time). But if you truly stay in this loan for 30 yrs, you're saving money.

For what it's worth, you should not be worrying about not getting him in trouble. He is actively doing something illegal and dragging you into it as well.

I started acting way busier than I actually am and I let my new coworker take on majority of my work. 

He said he loves working hard and being busy, and he was constantly asking me for more work… so…. Careful what you wish for .

Before this, I would constantly have mental breakdowns , get sick, and spiral under the stress.

You owe somewhere 5-12k depending on the wages you list above and your employer will owe taxes too on your wages for SS, Unemployment - I mean you are working under the table so you are not getting SS credits, unemployment and you wont be able to show these earnings for loans or anything else

Its illegal your employer knows this and its intentional and is gas lighting you.  

By the response they will probably fire you if you continue to push so be prepared

I was in your shoes not more than a month ago. It’s fixable! I got sent to an offsite training for the high performers at my company and realized through conversation that almost everyone there had the same feelings you’re having now.

If you’re already planning to quit your job, you’ve got nothing to lose there. Ask yourself: “Why would I fight to keep a job that makes me miserable?” You’re already looking for the exit, why not try making your $600K job work for you before you go?

You need to change your work habits dramatically.

Right now, today you should:
- Take a vacation for as long as you can, and delete the apps from your phone to remove temptation to work.

- Stop trying to fit emails and calls with the team into every crack in your calendar. Simply let it go undone. Seriously.

- Ask yourself “which of my team can take this for me?” For every single task that comes your way. Delegate your way to an open calendar. Speaking from personal experience, it’s actually possible.

- block time in your calendar to go for a walk every day. No phone, no work. A literal, actual walk to give your brain space to work through the thoughts you’re currently having instead of sleeping.

- Enforce your personal expectation that you will leave the office with AT LEAST as much energy as you came in with. Avoid people who drain your energy, and give yourself permission to leave and go home if you need to. That mental permission is super important.

- Every morning, do a “temperature check” with yourself to see how you feel. Stop lying to yourself and saying you’re fine. Nothing makes burnout worse than feeling like you need to hide it.

- Tell your boss how you’re feeling and ask for their help holding yourself to the above. It’s not fair to them if you keep this secret and then crash out with no warning

- Start committing to yourself with the same fidelity and trustworthiness you do for the company. 

- Take self care seriously. Eat a salad, get your workout in, grab a cup of coffee with a close friend and go to bed on time. It adds up to make a very real difference

What are you checking it for? Delete and move on

Some honest questions to ask yourself:

- You’ve been working for nearly 20 years, making $350k, but only have around 3x your salary in net worth saved. This implies you’ve been spending most of your money. How confident are you that you can live on near poverty wages for the rest of your life after 20 years of upper middle class living?

- You say you don’t think you’ll make it to 75+. Would you be surprised if you found out that this was what most people think when they’re younger? Would it change your mind if you found out this conviction is common and usually proves faulty?

- Thirty years is a long time. What if you end up with dependents you didn’t plan for? 

- (Most Importantly) What if the math just doesn’t math, either due to high inflation, higher than expected spending, whatever, and you run out of money when you’re 55 or 60 and too old to easily work but with 20 years left of living?

Based on the admittedly limited information you’ve shared I don’t think you’re emotionally or financially ready to leanfire simply due to how big a shift in income there is. Lean fire works best when you can glide into retirement without changing your spending habits. But you’ll have to reduce your discretionary spending by probably more than 50% which is a huge lifestyle shift. 

Why not just step down to a part time role?

I think it’s extremely likely you run out of money within a decade and have to return to work with your best earning years behind you.

I read this and all I can see is BURNOUT.  The first step is to find a new job, or no job for a while.  Then everything will change mentally about work, money, plans, dreams, etc.  

The burnout is clouding all judgment at this point, so there’s no use spending a lot of time answering all of these other questions and making major life decisions about relocating, retiring, etc.  After you dynamite the logjam, your answers to all of these will probably change.  So dynamite the logjam.  Come up with a plan for 6 months off, make sure you have health insurance covered, make sure you’ve got a budget put together, and recharge your batteries so you don’t have a heart attack at age 36.  

You don't become the most hated company in America, edging out private equity, corporate landlords, and all insurance companies without giving it some elbow grease.

Set up a meeting with myself so it looked like I busy in reality I was doing chores 

Take a long time to get through smaller tasks

Create busy work for yourself so you can take longer to get through tasks and not get assigned new ones 

Over explain the things you’re working on and provide really long winded answers to things

Any US company willing to hire you remotely in another country has to have the legal right to employ people there and comply with all local taxes and employment law. If they already have operations in the country they may consider it, but you’ll be paid based on the local wage not the US wage.  In that case you may as well apply to local companies too.

Different company, but when a layoff happened people laid off were marked as guests and only had access to the guest channels. And they still had DM access. So, maybe it's like that for you.

Generally it's to allow communication with hr to get you set up with information. Like returning devices, cobra, or stock/401k info.

First thing to note is that you're very young, so you probably should not be looking at 4% if you're going to retire completely.  At 3% the chances of running out of money ever are quite low, but at 4%, not really.

However, I'm not hearing you say you want to retire forever.  I hear you saying that you're burned out, yes.  I hear you talking about 2-3 days a week, yes.  I hear you saying 6-12 months break, yes.

But I wonder if what I'm hearing is partly just that burnout speaking.

Because I spotted something else: "passionately love the tech scene and growth oriented."   So it seems to me that for the right position, working on the right kind of tech that you enjoy, probably in an individual contributor role rather than management, full-time work is not really out of the question and possibly even could seem quite good?  Some form of Coast FIRE could make sense to you - where you are drawing down *zero* from your portfolio - let it grow - but not really needing to add to it either, and still having a great shot at a very early FIRE at 40 or mid-40s.

I'd say the biggest tough point here is really the golden handcuffs of that $600k salary.  Given your expenses (you didn't add it all up for us, so I'm only estimating) you ought to be able to save something in the neighborhood of $400k per year.  So one thing you might consider is a bit of "quiet quitting" or "Coast in place" - figure out what aspects of the current job you like and what aspects you don't like, and do the ones you like, and stop caring about the ones you don't.

You didn't give us a huge amount of details, so maybe I'm off track here, but if the stress is from having to hit certain numbers or whatever, just give yourself permission to miss those numbers, knowing you might get fired or laid off or similar.  That's ok, since you're just there to get your paycheck for now.  I'm not suggesting that you should underperform to the point of feeling guilty or being a jerk, I'm just saying: don't let it get to you.  Do what you want, and see how it goes.

The objective would be just one or two more years, think of it in a way as a "practice FIRE" - that is to say, get serious with a spreadsheet and figure out what life would be like if you retired completely in SEA and go ahead and start living like that now.  (Obviously your rent will be higher, but I mean the rest of life as much as possible.). If you find that comfortable and rewarding, then you'll get mental strength and satisfaction of realizing that you're actually FI already.

It's funny that you're having problems returning equipment to Comcast. They're bad at this on the employment side too.

What's your unique value? 

Plenty of US based workers are struggling to find employment right now. Unless you have a hyper unique skill I'm not sure why a company would hire you over a local candidate.

Buying points is essentially insurance against rates being the same or higher in the future. If you plan on being in the home for longer than the breakeven period, then it’s a personal decision since no ones crystal ball knows what rates will be like. If they’re higher in the future then you made a good decision, and if they’re lower (or low enough) you can refinance. You’ve done the math on this side of the equation. Do you have any higher interest debt? Could make sense to pay that off instead of buying points.

This was a few years ago, but I interviewed three times with them for a contract-to-perm role and got as far as being shown my workstation and being told to expect paperwork to sign. Three weeks went by - an old friend died unexpectedly so I was out of pocket for a bit - and I didn't hear anything, and once that was all over with, after about a dozen emails and phone calls, I finally got through to someone who had no knowledge of me or my semi-offer and said that someone else had been hired. It sounds like they've only gotten worse.

Youll have to be applying to companies that already have a program in your country for that role.  You’re not going to have any luck just applying to US remote listings from abroad.

Will it lead to higher profits for US based companies? Don't most US companies manufacturer outside of the US, so their operating costs/COGS will increase?

This is funny, but also a true story. The owner of a company that I used to worked for decided to take an extended break from day to day operations after a death in his family. He hired a COO to replace himself while he travels with his girlfriend to "find himself". The year he left, the firm's revenue went up 30%. The next year, another 30%. Productivity also went up and the company hit a year of record earnings.

On the 3rd year, the owner decided to return and sales slumped. Several key employees resigned and the company began a decade of decline. The owner claimed his industry has changed, and things would really make a turn for the worse if he didn't return, but some say the COO was obviously a superior manager but the owner couldn't let go of power and that being at the helm was worth more than making more revenue with somebody else in the driver's seat.

This is what I see in a lot of SME which has plateaued in growth. The weak link is the owner him/herself because they refuse to step out of the equation.

What’s the Most Overlooked Skill That’s Actually Crucial for Career Success?

Anything more complex than a basic full-stack CRUD app is far too complex for LLMs to create. Companies who claim they can actually use these features in useful ways seem to just be lying. 

Their plan seems to be as follows:

1. Make claim that AI LLM tools can actually be used to speed up development process and write working code (and while there's a few scenarios where this is possible, in general its a very minor benefit mostly among entry level engineers new to a codebase) 

2. Drive up stock price from investors who don't realize you're lying

3. Eliminate engineering roles via layoffs and attrition (people leaving or retiring and not hiring a replacement)

4. Once people realize there's not enough engineers, hire cheap ones in South America and India

Man, today, I visited Fiverr and I came to know that I know nothing. Literally nothing. Man, I don't know how to do web scraping, idk a thing about app development. More arguably, when not were, but what industries are safer for devs if a full blown recession were to hit the US? Currently in a government contractor company. I've been applying to any and all other jobs I'm qualified for to get that job hopping pay bump, but more and more I'm wondering if I should focus on areas that are safer for when shit goes full south.

My (35F) family member suddenly passed and left me around 2.5 million. I have no debt other than my mortgage on a 2 br condo. I quit my job about a month ago and hoping to never go back to a 9-5. Can I make this windfall last me the rest of my life living modestly with no job?

We (couple in our early fifties) recently achieved FAT status after a liquidity event. Currently sitting on 17M+ USD liquid (mostly cash due to said event) and 4M in real estate (2 homes). There's a (potentially substantial, potentially less substantial) second bite coming if we continue work for a few more years.

Our path to FAT has been quite traditional, which is why I wanted to share it here: we started an old-fashioned professional service company two decades ago to create a job for ourselves, worked our behinds off, were lucky to see our company grow and grow while making healthy profits, and finally accepted an offer to sell. 

(While this may sound like a smooth ride, it was anything but. Stress was a constant companion and in recent years it became toxic stress because we realized that we just had \*so much to lose\*. It's why we ultimately decided to sell.) 

Our life goal now is quite simple: to live on less than 2% of our principal. That's still 340k per year in a MCOL area - almost double what we spend today, so doubt that we'll even achieve that. 

Other than that, we want to enjoy the people around us: our family, our friends, our team, our community and the new friends we will hopefully make now that we have a little bit more time. All this while travelling more, finding some hobby that can enrich us, surrounding ourselves with beautiful things, enjoying the best restaurants and hospitality the world has to offer. 

I wanted to thank everyone in this group for helping to keep me motivated. I think I stumbled on this group around 2017 when our liquid NW was around 3,5-ish. I remember reading a post by someone who said they had accumulated 13M liquid NW at age 53 and I was awed. I couldn't believe the sheer magnitude of that. 

So to everyone here grinding it out: keep the faith, you will get there too. Just keep going, through the incredible stressful ups and downs of a high-stakes career or an entrepreneurial journey.

FAT status achieved

Buying a house for $370k, $40k down. Interest rate is 6%. 30 year VA mortgage. 

2 points gets us to 5.5% for $6,600. Saving $104.82/month in interest 

3 points gets us to 5.25% for $9,900. Saving $156.25/month in interest 

Break even points are both right around 63 months for both scenarios. 

I can’t imagine rates will drop much in the next 5 years so refinancing is likely not even on the 10 year horizon, right? So it makes sense to buy down the rate now? I feel like I know the answer but I need someone to validate it lol.

Comcast is an outdated dinosaur of a company that is currently undergoing some sort of "transformation". They are offshoring thousands of jobs to India to people who have no idea what they're doing, they are implementing artificial intelligence into their company, hardware and tech stack. But again, everyone is completely clueless and has no idea what they're doing. They hired me a year ago promising me a very fulfilling long-lasting career, and only after a year did they reveal that they actually didn't need me at all, and laid off my entire team including my whole department under my director and my manager.


After laying me off, I was trying to return the company provided equipment, my laptop and all that stuff to them. There was no contact information, the UPS store that I went to drop the item off to could not figure out how it worked because they have some special system they have to enter a code into, so there was no way for me to figure it out for days on end. I was simply shocked. These people could not figure out how to get my technology to them, and anytime I called the HR center for support, it routed to India to someone who I could barely understand who doesn't even know what they're doing, was completely unhelpful 


This has been the most unprofessional company I've ever worked for, I think anyone would be crazy to have to work for them

Can you give me your most unhinged toxic job survival hacks?

Hear me out:

1. We are completely burnt out, and would much rather spend the healthy years of our lives living the way we want to than slaving away just to build a nest egg for when we're sick and might need care at the end of our lives.
2. I don't plan on living past 74 (my partner will be 80).  By that time it'll be 2061, and I'm confident the world will not be a friendly place to a 74 / 80-year-old that can't pull their own weight.  I'm fully convinced of this, so please see this as set in stone.
3. I don't want to save for elderly care, or any sick years.  I've seen two of my parents struggle with debilitating chronic diseases for years and I would rather be dead.  That, and if I *did* save for those years, it would be at the cost of my healthy years.

Assets:  We have a car, a truck, and a 30' travel trailer that are fully paid off.  I just bought 90 acres of land up north for cash.  About $70k in the bank.  We're about to sell each of our houses, which will net us $450k USD in net proceeds.   I have $300k in retirement and my partner has $580k .  I own about $200k in equity that will be freed up at a later point.  This isn't taking into account any possible inheritances.  If the world turns out much better than I'm thinking it will, we've been making good money so far so our social security will be decent beginning in 2042 and 2048 .

Costs:  No loans or CC debt.  We're willing to decrease our cost of living to where it needs to be to not work.  We don't have any major illnesses.  No kids.

If you were in my situation, how would you make this dream a reality?  What would you build on the 90 acres of land?  Would you lease some of it for growing food?  Parcel it and sell it?  Learn how to build and build as many houses as I could?  Hold onto it?  Invest the $?  Use the $ to build houses?  How would you invest?  How risky or risk averse?  Any government programs or tips and tricks to make our money stretch?

My partner (44) and I (38) are completely burnt out and are looking for paths to retire in the next month.  I don't plan on living past 74 and I don't have kids or anyone I want to leave money to.  I don't want to save for elderly care.  Can we get some honest advice on how to make this a reality?

We 35M 33F hit $2 million this year. This is a number I was dreaming about just 5 years ago but now all I feel is burned out and despair. Ever since I moved to big tech I've totally changed. From someone who passionately love the tech scene and growth oriented, to a miserable, anxious, and stressed out salaryman who hates waking up every morning. Big tech sucked the joy of tech out of me and I dread every waking moment thinking about work. It not only has affected my mental health but also started adding tensions in our marriage. I just want to end it and get out of the race.

* Brokerage: $1.6M (VTI, VXUS)
* 401k: $250k
* Cash: $150k in HYSA
* Total: $2M
* Income: \~600k, senior for a typical big tech, demanding and stressful

**Expenses**

We both subscribe to minimalism and therefore live a basic lifestyle. Renting. No mortgage or property. Paid off car. We cook everyday, eat out 1-2 times a week. Our biggest expenses currently are rent and kid daycare in a VHCOL which totals \~8k/month. Our second biggest spend is family holiday, \~15-20k/year total for 1 international + 1-2 domestic trips. We are migrants to the US and our families are half way around the world. Seeing them and letting them spend time with our toddler is a top priority for us. 

We know $2M cannot sustain our current annual expense at 3-4% wdr. But we're willing to explore options to make it work. Based on my research, people in my shoes have these paths:

1. Take a sabbatical to reset then return and grind again

2. Change job. Find a lower stress lower pay job and coast til FIRE

3. FIRE to a cheaper country to stretch dollar value

1 and 2 are both out for me. The thought of working gives me chill. I actually think I'm not fit (mentally) to actually start a new job. And given my position and the current job market, there's almost zero chance I can do a sabbatical and still return to my high paying job.

I've been thinking about 3 a lot. Open to relocating to another LCOL, another country, another continent. Given our residencies we can live in US, NZ/AU, or SEA without visa issue. Preferably the laters since that would cut down our yearly family traveling cost significantly. As a backup plan, I'm open to working again in a reduced capacity, 2-3 days a week though I think I'll need 6-12 months break to really reset my mind and work on my anxiety.

I was recently laid off from my job in customer success, but thankfully, I’ve got some savings and a bit of extra cash from a lucky break I had earlier this year. That gives me some time to breathe while searching for a new role.  
  
The challenge I’m facing is securing a remote job with a US company while living in Europe. I’ve highlighted my flexibility and experience working across different time zones, but I get the feeling that my location is often a dealbreaker for potential employers. Even though I’m more than willing to adapt to any time zone they need, it doesn’t seem to help much in the application process.  
  
Has anyone else had this issue while trying to get US-based remote positions from abroad? How did you manage to break through the location barrier and convince employers that you’re the right fit? I’d love any tips or insights from those who have been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance!

Struggling to land US remote jobs while based in Europe – any advice?

I began working last June as a “Family Assistant” (Nanny/Household Employee). I work about 40 or more hours/week @35/hr - $65-$80,000/yr. I got the position through an agency that pairs us with high end families. I was told I would be given a W-2 on a signed agreement, though after some time I wasn’t given one and asked my employer (Dad of the family) about it.  I was told that I wouldn’t need one, and he said most people in a position like mine are just paid under the table. I am Zelled my paycheck coming from his personal company every 2 weeks. He said the IRS really only goes after big dogs and I shouldn’t worry. He also told me that I’m considered “self-employed,” which I don’t qualify as after reading the guidelines for self employment. Legally I am a Household Employee as this is my full time job and I am being paid over $2,300 every 2 weeks. 

I’m young, in my early 20’s and don’t know a ton about taxes, and trusted what I was told from the wealthy/successful person who pays me. But lately I’ve been trying to learn a lot about credits, savings, loans, etc. After doing a ton of reading I started to become concerned about not being paid on the books, as it obviously will affect my ability to receive loans, show employment history, and now I’m freaking out about taxes. I asked him for a W-2 again near the beginning of this year, and he told me that I really don’t need one and if we started it now it would result in both of us paying a lot of money. He said I would still be able to be approved for anything financially by just showing proof of my monthly payments to a bank/institution. He didn’t seem happy about me asking, but said he’d maybe consider it down the line if really needed… I haven’t heard anything since, but I asked a total of 3 times and was talked out of it each time.

I had a part time job in schools before this job last year, so I’m going to have to file that. And I truly have no idea what to do, and seeking advice.

What are my options? How should I go about filing? How do I go about this without having to pay a ton of money? What will happen if I dont report as he’s advising me to? Is this on him or me, and how can I avoid getting me or him in trouble (which would obviously risk me losing my job)?

There's a tradition in my family that involves a parent secretly saving money for their child every month, and then surprising them with the money on their 18th birthday. When my mom did it for me, she simply put $20 each month into a savings account for 18 years. My plan is to save $40 every month for my son.

I'm trying to be more savvy with the cash I'm putting away, so I opened a two year 5% CD last year when he was born with two years worth of savings at once. Basically, instead of putting $40 per month into a savings account for him, I put $960 (40 x 24 months) into the CD. Initially, I was just going to keep rolling this savings into CDs and keep repeating this process until my son turns 18, but now I'm wondering if I should invest it instead. 

When the CD matures, would it better to invest this money into something like the S&P 500? Could I buy $40 of stock each month, then sell it all when he turns 18 and give it to him? I'm assuming this would be a better yield than just using CDs. Any thoughts on the best way to grow this secret savings for him?

Hi there! I am a content creator and avid developer who has recently scaled his AI scheduling agent to over $9k MRR this year. The agent helps optimizes the scheduling of workers for manages, small businesses, etc. While I launched this Saas as a desktop app in October of last year, I migrated it to mobile only which every user loved. 

My scheduling agent is pretty niche so I charge a subscription of $500/mo for each user. Pretty crazy as in the Saas world this is like a super premium price. That's where I learned this pretty famous lesson: the **riches are in the niches!** The 3 main reasons I was able to achieve $9k MRR were the following (and hopefully this helps other Saas founders or i guess agent-as-a-service founders haha):

1. For a price of $500/mo, you better be your user's best friends. I developed a good relationship with each individual user and can probably name them all of the top of my head. Customers paying high monthly subscriptions expect your constant support and care. Yes you can hire a VA, but also get to know them personally too. 
2. Referrals are your friend. I got a couple of clients through Linkedin Sales Navigator, Instagram, but the most were from referrals. Happy users = they tell their friends who are also probably in a similar space and before you know it, you have over 10+ referred users. I imagine for cheaper Saas it would be even more. I have another Saas for instagram outreach called instadm that's only $70/mo, and I have got over 20 referrals for that (but that's for another story)!
3. Don't overdo the AI. Everyone now a days loves saying "our app has AI" in it. That's cool. But the wow factor should not be the AI, it should be on the result that you are bringing your user. People forget about this in this AI boom we are in.
4. App is best. I love desktop apps but nothing beats being able to use an app from anywhere at anytime. I mean who is carrying their desktop with them everyday ahah. Phone? Everyone has that on them!
